getting gas past fuel pump

Hi, first time poster.

I'm having some issues with my fuel system on a project 911T I just picked up with a '74 CIS motor.

I've been having trouble getting the fuel past the fuel pump, and am wondering what to try next. I've cleaned out the gas tank and the line to the fuel pump, I've changed the gas tank filter, and I've replaced the fuel pump.

When I turn the key the fuel pump starts, but makes a high-pitched whirring that makes me think the pump is only pushing air. I've disconnected the fuel lines at the back of the car both before the pressure accumulator and also at the return line to check if the fuel is flowing, both with unsuccessful results.

I've also tried pushing up on the intake to help prime the system, to no avail.

The pump is at the front of the car just under the gas tank, so I believe that fuel is making it to the pump, especially because if I loosen the tube at the inlet a little bit, I get a couple drips of gas. I just don't know if it is actually getting into the pump.

Next I'm going to try the line at the outlet of the pump, but my fear is that I am just missing something obvious and basic. Is it that I need more positive pressure in the fuel tank to initiate the flow? The tank is about 2/3 full, but I've read that some people need to pressurize the tank with air and rags to get the fuel running, does anyone think this might be the solution? Or is it more likely that there is a clog in the line running the length of the car as it is an older vehicle?

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm hoping it is something basic that I simply have not noticed, but I am not sure and am running out of ideas.

Thank you in advance.

Nick

In case anyone happens across this thread... I figured it out.

Turns out the stupid thing was wired backwards. The red wire is now on the negative terminal and the black one is on the positive and it runs like a champ... Feel pretty stupid right about now but at least it is pumping fuel now and not just making noise!

Hopefully my stupidity will save someone a headache someday...
