I have got a pair of original pre-74 heat exchangers, but the sheet metal was rusted through so I removed it. The pipes are in great shape. I don't drive the car in the winter, but need some heat during Fall and Spring.
Does anyone make a kit to recover these things? Has anyone got any other ideas? I don't think it should be too hard to fabricate something. Maybe SSI would sell the stainless steel sheet metal? ------------------ Tony '78 911SC [This message has been edited by tbitz (edited 08-27-2001).] |

Tony,
I'm sure SSI would be thrilled to sell you the sheet metal ... as long as it comes attached to a 'free' set of headers! Pssss...sssst! They aren't in business to do favors for guys wanting to keep the 'old' heat exchangers alive! Certainly not impossible for the DIY guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if it took 10-20 hours per side to fit, cut, grind, weld, re-measure, cut, grind, fit, cut, weld etc. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

Warren...ROFL!!
Actually I did see such a thing (replacement covers) for sale in Excellence a while ago. If you can weld, it might be more fun than a root canal. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website [This message has been edited by Doug Zielke (edited 08-27-2001).] |

Doug, any idea who the vendor of the sheet metal was? (I don't subscribe to Excellence).
I have a mig welder, spot welder, and small Oxy torch. Welding should not be a problem... [This message has been edited by tbitz (edited 08-27-2001).] |
