EEEK - Wrong Targa bar! Being put on tomorrow...
So my '73 currently has a black Targa bar that was painted by the previous owner. I want a stainless bar. I was at Parts Heaven a few weeks ago and picked up the cleanest Stainless Targa bar they had.
I took the car to the shop that will be doing the Targa Bar swap for me tomorrow, and brought the Targa bar with me, and despite having looked at the bar a million times since I bought it, I just realized as I was unloading it that it does not have the vertical vent slots in it!!! It would appear that it is from a short wheelbase car! It does look a lot plainer, but I don't think it wold look BAD on the car. What do you guys think, my car is far from "correct" (with an RSR widebody etc.) should I take it back, postpone the swap and find a slotted one?? or just put this one on?? any opinions would be appreciated. |
Does it fit?

Why dont you try stripping the painted bar and see what you end up with. I just stripped and re-finished mine and it looks great.

Isn't that an early SWB bar? Should fit fine. Looks cleaner, too.
|
Thanks for the suggestions, yes I believe it is from like a '68. So it is the same size and should fit then?
It does look cleaner without the vents, which is what I was thinking after seeing some pics, so thought it might look nice. I was kind of concerned it could look TOO plain on a '73 tho, since it has some more "modern" trim compared to a '68. Maybe the one I have is good under the paint.... I could see if we can check I guess it all comes down to personal preference lol, any other thoughts? |
According to Dr.B. Johnson's book: "The 911& 912 Porsche", page 16, the Targa bar change over from solid sides to vented sides took place in mid-year 1968:

Yeah, thanks, I realize its from a short wheelbase car. I know it isn't " year correct" for my car, my car is far from that, lol. It is a widebody and it's black!
I am just looking for opinions on how it would look on my '73, I like the clean look but am just concerned about the fact that it may be too plain. Thanks to anyone offering an opinion, gonna have to decide by tomorrow on wether or not to go forward with putting it on. |
If it were me, I'd do it.

OK, so here are the pics of the newly-installed solid Targa bar on my in-process "making it look old again" RSR wide-body '73... (please ignore the later model seats, I am putting a pair of cord centered RS buckets in this weekend!) I just got the chrome windshield trim on yesterday, and put the chrome door handles, mirrors, door trim and quarter windows on this past weekend (I know theyre the non-vent windows, they look like the '73 coupe windows and I thought they went with the wide body and plain Targa bar a bit better)
