Help with Ring and Pinion depth pattern
I wonder if any one can shed some light for the ring and pinion depth pattern I'm getting on my diff on a 71 901 dog leg box.
Are the following pictures the correct pattern to run this diff or not? Thanks for the photo's. I have seen this post on a link to you tube. The only problem is that my pattern does not resemble any one in the photo.
My pattern is totally different, to my eyes anyway. Unless you can point me in the right direction? Once more thanks for the help it's appreciated. Cheers Veeman |
Veeman It looks a little forward but sometimes in the real world of metal and alignments it could be perfect. It appears most of the contact is in or close to the center. Just for fun Blue the other side and run the diff backwards and get a print, with the curvature being opposite it may give you a better idea where it is. Anyway it close or within a sliver.

Thanks once more for the info. I have run the diff in the opposite direction, that is the second picture.
I've looked at it when the sun has caught it, and it needs to be brought back to the centre. If I place another paper gasket at the intermediate plate, I wonder if that will pull the pattern more to the centre of the diff cog. Cheers Veeman |
More than likely that will help sometimes the pattern will be worse but sometimes its better with diffs you always have to experiment a little.

Been asking around about my diff. There has been various responses to the pictures above.
Some people think that it is to be scrapped, whilst other seem to think it will be noisy and will brake down very quickly. So, I'm getting all sort of vibes, and is putting further doubt in my mind as if to replace it or stick with it. Cheers Veeman |
What I learned setting up diffs in the 4x4 world is...what you see on the bench is NEVER what you see on the street. You load the diff so much harder in multiple direction when you give it the gas compared to spinning the diff on the bench. Sometimes we would stick axles and brake assemblies into the splines so that the ring gear was now "heavy" and better mimicked how it would mesh in real life, but it never quite made up for not having the whole system on the ground with full engine power.
Best option is set it up as central as possible, drive it 500 miles, tear it down and look at the patterns, and decide from there. To me, you currently look too far top and heel, and quite a bit at that. it looks like the center of your contact is on the edge of the tooth? I hate reading blue goop, the yellow seems much clearer to me. |
