How to clean return entry at tank ?
I want to make sure that there's no residual gunk where the return line enters the tank.
Does anyone know how is that fitting built into the tank ? Is it a straight tube just entering the tank or a more complex arrangement like the supply line which connects to a swirl pot inside the tank ? |

On my 79 SC I don't know what the exact shape of the return tube in to the fuel tank is. But I was able to clean it out without removing the tank. Mine was plugged up solid with gunk after the car's 16 year hibernation. I did not remove the tank but was working on it when the car was hoisted up on a shop lift. I got a short, about 18" long drain cleaning snake from OSH Orchard Supplies. That is very similar to a rotor rooter snake but shorter with a handle , smaller in diameter and more flexible. After an hour's worth of constant digging in and pulling out I got the return tube free and clear of all debris. The return tube does not seem to go into the swirl pot, it just seems to end right after entering the tank body.
Here is a picture of the inside of a tank with a swirl pot. The small tube entering the tank outside the swirl tank must be the return tube.

You can try using a piece of electrical wire to push into the line, also you may find a brush in the home improvement store used to clean lines in paint guns to run through, air from a compressor also.

An old inner length of speedo cable chucked into a drill might work very well for this.

Thanks, all good ideas.
I've already used a compressor but I think there's something still there... That's why I wanted to know whether it's a simple tube going in or a more complex layout like the swirl pot. |
