Lots a talk at Gingerman

Hey all, I was talking to a cousin-in-law (what ever that is) who likes to tell everybody everything. He's an all right guy, just talks first and thinks later (even before drinking!)

Anyway, he was telling me about his latest "toy". It's a 300ZX turbo he claimed had 342 hp (flywheel or rw I don't know). He was talking about running it at Gingerman and I casually asked him what kind of times he was running... I guess I caught him out a little as he had to stop and think for a second and then said mid 1.30's. Now I seem to remember Chris Streit saying he was running 1.32's or 35's and that the track record was in the low 1.30's. Is that right. And if so, is my cousin blowing a little smoke?

Also the funny part... I don't brag about having a 911 to anyone, they usually see it before I tell them I have one. So he didn't know I was P-car freak. I told him I'd like to get out there some time and see what its like, He said what are you going to use a mini van.... He kind of pissed me off with that one, but I got the last laugh... I said no I don't own a minivan but that I could either take the Expedition, or my 13 second 5.slow mustang, or maybe I could use my old 911. His jaw dropped as I think he realized I was a little more knowledgeable and car qualified than he thought. Then I said see you out there sometime and left... My wife even thought it was funny

Dennis,

My times are usually in the mid-low 1:30's... Best lap is a low 1:34... In comparison, my first few times out there in my street 930 were low 1:40s... Track record is probably MUCH lower...

For further comparison here are some results from the fastest closed wheel group from my last race...

'73 Brabham BT-40 1:26.863
'70 Lola T192 1:30.097
'72 Titan MK-6 FF 1:32.226
'72 Merlyn MK20A 1:33.331
'69 Lola T-70 Coupe 1:35.634

So to run a mid-1:30's in a street stock car is an impressive feat I think... Futher from the GT class in Midwest council in an event last year... These are fully prepared cars GT-1 and GT-2 cars...

96 Chev Corvette 1:29.473
86 Ford Mustang 1:32.645
87 Mazda RX-7 1:32.918
87 Pont Firebird 1:33.052
88 Mazda RX-7 1:33.440
88 BMW M3 1:35.154
85 Chev Corvette 1:33.927
F 86 Ford Mustang 1:38.930

So,... Heh heh... Sign him up for Daytona!

Porsche Crest G-Man Track Record

Funny how a hot-lap timer tends to settle the argument.

FYI- The track record at G-Man is 1:01.749 seconds, for an average speed of 109.302 MPH, set by Paul Tracy in 1996 in a Penske-Mercedes Indy Car.

The BS stops when the green flag drops. Right on.

I was 99% sure he was full of it. Reassurance is good though. I'll have to talk him into meeting me out there so he can show his cars true potential

I hear you about not letting people know we are car freaks.

I have derived great pleasure at many cocktail parties from listening to someone go on and on with a load of BS only to hit them with something at the end of their tale which makes them realize they truely know nothing about cars.

BTW, what were Champ cars doing at Gingerman?

According to my cousin, the only person who passed him was Paul Gentalosi (sp) in his Trans AM race car..... I did however keep a straight face....

Gotta be nice to him though, he claims some connections at the tire rack(what ever the store is) in South Bend, might need some tires for the ole E some day when my ancient p600's weather crack enough...

Well I suppose a low 1:30 isn't impossible in his car given the right driver... Was it a prepared Z, or is it in street trim, race tires?

I'm "doin" the motor this winter, we'll see what difference some extra ponies makes in my lap times next year!

(Assuming I can keep the wheels on, see thread about cracked Fuchs, har har..)
