Is it normal for the pressure and level gauge to "pop" around?

The movements they have aren't fluid. Both the oil pressure and level gauge twitch, especially the pressure gauge. I'll be sitting at idle and it'll hover around 1.5 but then all of a sudden twitch to over two. I'd think the movements would be pretty fluid, but maybe this is normal? Car has 200k on it, and oil pressure sender was replaced at 150k (2004) during the top end rebuild.

My Druck gauge flicks and jumps just as you described...not much at all, just a bit. I had to replace the pressure sender unit recently and it still does it. I'm sure it's normal, as long as it's not jumping radically. My sender works great...when the engine is running at normal operating temps and parked on level ground, the gauge matches exactly the level on my dipstick. That's the most important thing.

Does the pressure gauge twitch in time to the rpms? If not could be a sender continuity issue. If it twitches WITH rpms at idle, could be a vacuum leak.

The oil level gauge lies.....the dip stick is the final authority.

My oil level gauge sits pretty still when level, idle, and it has refilled, but it still moves around a bit. More than what I'd think for a still oil tank, but sounds like it's pretty normal. It's accurate, though, with my dipstick. The oil pressure gauge is generally accurate, but even at idle when the RPMs aren't changing, it twitches around. Sometimes it'll be at 1, and then twitch to 2, and then back to one - despite a steady idle at the engine.

My oil pressure gauge used to do this, I thought perhaps it was just normal. Then I found that the vacuum hose connecting the fuel pressure regulator and damper has a T-connector where it plugs into the back of the throttle body and it wasn't connected. And there was another small vacuum hose that plugs in right above it and was disconnected too, just hanging there. After I reconnected them a side-effect seems to be that my oil pressure gauge is no longer twitchy.

Re: oil pressure gauge.

I noticed that someone previous had replaced the 'faston' connector at the gauge with aluminum instead of the normal brass kind. Needle swung from one extreme to the other until I cleaned it up some.
