'80 911sc - adjusting the outside mirror base(the part that allows it to rotate)?

All.

A few years ago, I had some parts painted on my car, including the driver's side mirror. It's all back together now, but the base of the mirror is loose. The Allen screw which mounts the mirror to the body is fully secured. What needs tightening is the base of the mirror that allows it to rotate(rather than break off) if you were to run into something. This is a euro car, not sure if that's different vs. a non-euro car.

Any suggestions on how to tighten the base rotating mechanism? I recall something about poping the mirror out of the housing to get at the internals - do I remember this correctly?

thanks!

The spring keeps it tight. You did put the spring in i hope.

Pulling the Mirror

You will need to take the mirror off.
I believe your 80 is the same as my 82.

Pop the Mirror Glass off (Scaryest part but it does just pop out)

Pull the wires and unscrew the bolts that hold the motor mechanizm.

Sorry I did not get pictures of the Allen bolt but you can't miss it.
Once it is all apart it is easy to tighten down.

Wires are the hardest part...

many thanks to the quick replies, and very detailed explanation. It brings back memories of taking the mirror apart for paint. Off to the garage I go.

cheers!
