3.2 Idle FIXED
The idle on my 86 Carrera cab seemed to have a mind of it’s own. Maybe it idles fine (800 RPM), maybe 1500 or 2000. The most fun was exiting the freeway and it red lined. Had to cut the switch, thankfully the steering didn’t lock.
So I replaced the throttle spring, no change. Replaced the bushings on the transmission bell crank, no long-term improvement. Removed the toe board and bent the bracket. No change. Before I rebuilt the pedal assembly I decided to try to adjust the throttle rod at the transmission. When I got under the car I noticed there was no adjustment left. Looking at the cruise control adjustment I noticed one of the ears was broken. I determined when accelerating the adjustment block was moving toward the rear of the car. Then when decelerating sometimes the adjusting block would hang on the cruise control bracket causing the problem. When I found out the cruise control adjuster was only available as a complete unit at a cost of over $200.00 I decided to try a fix. See attached. I measured the diameter of the cruise control cable and cut two washers to clear the cable. Then I clocked them on the back of the cruise control adjuster so there was no opening. Then, after adjusting the cruise control cable so the cruise would work, (made sure there was some slack) I ran two zip ties from the ID side of the washers to the inside of the square bracket that holds the cruise control adjuster. Then I tensioned the zip ties. To be sure it really worked I drove it to an out of town meeting today. Over 200 trouble free miles with many stops and shifts. NO PROBLEMS at all... ![]() ![]()

wow - nice save - that could've been disastrous.

Good fix for a temp solution but thats $200 I would gladly spend on a correct repair. Something about a pair of tie-wraps keeping the car from getting stuck full throttle just doesn't settle well with me.

That clip broke early on with my car - I just use one tie wrap to hold it in the metal tab, it's held it there for over 300k miles. When I remove my engine for valve adjusts I just cut the tie wrap and put another one on. I dont' use a washer, I just put one tie wrap around the clip and metal tab.
Agree not the best solution, but nylon tie wraps are pretty strong and this doesn't have any real force on it. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 360k miles |
