Replacing mirrors
I have a 1970 911E which is my daily driver. At some point the PO removed the drivers side mirror and installed two black plasic ones which are kind of junky. I'd like to install two decent mirrors - I understand there are flag mirrors and electric mirrors - any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks. |
It has been my understanding that the "flag" style mirrors didn't see action until the advent of the safety bumpered 911s.
You could put a pair of the square shaped flag mirrors on it, but I think the original chrome mirrors look much better on 1st generation 911s. Just my opinion. |
Leland - thanks for the reply. Are those original chrome mirrors "ambidextrous" - I mean, can you put them on either side or do you need a left and a right?
Thanks. |
Now that, I wouldn't know...
You can probably do a quick search on Pelican to see what they have in the catalog. I'd guess "no"... but I have no idea. |

I'll make you a h*** of a deal. I have a 74-75 SS pair ( L & R ) still in the box. They are the replicas. I'm thinking .60c on the dollar.
I decided to paint mine. So I bought another black pair, to paint. E-mail if your interested. The big ( elephant ears ) mirrors came in 76. 74 & 75 came with impact bumpers and flag mirrors. If you want some elephant ears I have a pair of those too. But man, they're heavy :( :( |
In Europe they used the Durant mirror (a round one) until anywhere up to '75 (depended on market). These are also available but sounds like Cary is the guy to talk to 'cause the chrome rectangular ones are pretty cool and way more funtional.

Yup, forgot they made square ones in chrome.
That's what Jack has on his car, I think. That would look nice! |
Allen:
I have a '73 which originally came with the smaller "FalG" mirror on the drivers side only. It was small and didn't allow me to see all that much. I've since "upgrade" (to me anyway) to "74 flag mirrors (replicas from Perf. Prod .. sorry Wayne) on both the drivers and passengers side. These are much wider and as such offer greater visability. The only issue I have is that I still can't see all that much on the passengers side though it is a huge improvement over nothing. Two reasons for this: 1) it needs to be mounted a bit to far back (behind the corner window) and as such only the end of the mirror is visable unless you move your head. and 2) it's not a magnifying mirror. Objects are NOT closer than they appear. I'm hoping to rectify this by putting a small blind spot mirror over the glass on teh passengers side. All-in-all though, I'd have tp say that I'm glad I did it. I can't control what other idots on the road do. But I can at least try and get out of their way if I see them first. Hope this helps....Oliver |
I have the "smaller'' rectangular mirrors on my 72(both sides). Performance also sells them in black which I have and they look great. Sorry wayne

Lee, I didn't mean to step on you. I was making a sales pitch.. :p :p
Allan & Charlie here are the mirrors. Charlie I offered them to Allan first. So if he's interested they'll go there first. |
