Amsoil Z-Rod 20W50 ZDDP Levels
My lovely wife recently bought me a case of Amsoil Z-Rod 20W50 as a gift for the 911. I was complaining about the difficulty in finding the M1 oil locally the PO had been using in the car, so this was her way of helping out with the problem. Yes, I know....she's a keeper!
![]() Before committing to putting the oil in the car, I thought I'd contact Amsoil directly to see if I could get some info on zinc and phosphorus levels. This is what they told me: Zinc 1440ppm, 1320ppm phosphorus These look like good numbers, and I just thought I'd pass this along since there was very little info about this oil on the site. Will keep everyone posted as to how well it works. I intend to do an oil analysis after 3000 miles or so.

I've used this oil for awhile. I think it came out two years ago.
I had it tested multiple times on my way to 4,000 miles and 1.5 years old. Even then it was given a thumbs up to stay in the car for even longer. I ended up draining it as I was doing an engine drop. I think oil testing is very underrated these days. Especially for cars that are not driven that often.

Here is an odd thing. I was down at NJMP for the motorcycle races this past weekend. And my friend is sponsored by an Amsoil rep, who felt it necessary to take me through an oil sales pitch.
Now I know enough from reading these Oil threads and from talking to a bunch of tech folks, that our older 911 engines need oil with a bunch of Zinc additives. So it would seem logical that the Amsoil Z Rod oil would be the obvious choice. Yet when he ran my Make/Model/Year through the Amsoil oil selector out on the Amsoil site, it came back with some product called "European Blend" or something of the sort. So I tried to tell the rep that it was wrong, and that for a 1984 911, the Z-Rod is the correct choice. I mean in the Z-Rod description it even mentions flat tappets and the like. Based on this encounter, I am leery to ever listen to an Amsoil rep in the future. I mean, he was just flat out wrong. Looks like I'll be using Brad Penn in my car.

That salesman being confused doesn't make Z-Rod a bad oil. The additive numbers look good, no matter that the sales guy didn't know what he was doing.

The rep may have been thinking of the Porsche factory recommendation. With countless engine types out there he's bound to get it wrong from time to time.
