Bilstein shocks for aluminum rear trailing arms
I am upgrading the shocks on my 72T, however it has aluminum rear trailing arms which I understand are not original. Does this mean I need a different set of rear shocks than are listed for the 72 on Bilstein's site?
I believe the ones listed for up to 72 are B46-0167, and 73+ are B46-0169. Which should I get?

Jeff,
All '72 thru '74 cars used the same exact OEM Koni rear shocks! Which means that the changeover to the aluminum contrrol arms had no effect on shock application. Order the rear 'sport' Bilsteins for a '74 model ... and I'm sure you won't have any problem with fit! Surely, the Bilstein site didn't include the '72 models with the '69 thru '71 group!

Jeff,
Fortunately, for them, most people use catalogs from suppliers that have corrected that error! Otherwise ... they would have a 100% return rate from pissed-off '72 911 owners! I guess nobody at Biletein was aware that tghe '72 shocks and mounts had to be changed to make room for the 915 installation!

When I converted my 73 over to the aluminum arms I thought I noticed a slight change in the fit of the shocks. Seemed like the
geometry was slightly different (I used arms from a '76). The shocks work fine, just seemed like a tighter fit.

Just want to add that Porsche used Boge on the lesser Ts more often than the Konis according to my understanding. At least mine were black, blown, Boges when I removed them for Bilstein HDs. There was article in Pano about this somewheres... HTH

Hello
Just a moment: Early 911 steel radius arm had a M12x1,5 bolt and later verions the m14x1,5. Early Porsche only had Boge, De Carbon, Sachs or Koni coming from the factory. Bilstein came in 1972 ( basically they where developed for the RS and the Turbo ) Either Koni and Bilstein where options or included in the S-Package. Grüsse |
