Distributor rotor slop/ Timing issues
 

I have a 2.4 cis t with a Bosch distributor. When the idle changed, I checked the timing. Upon closer inspection, there is significant play in the rotor. I can rotate the rotor roughly 15 degrees. ( The rotor is snug on the shaft). There is no spring resistance. There should be spring loading, correct? My 74 914 2.0 is spring loaded. Apparently, the rotor has been moving which has caused my timing to move from 5 ATDC to 5-10 BTDC. Funny, it runs better at 5 BTDC than the spec of 5 ATDC. I dropped some oil down the shaft the rotor resides upon. Now there is less resistance.

Obviously, I need to pull the distributor. Anyone have a similiar experience? Parts available?

Why does it run better out of spec at 5 BTDC?

Scott ... the diagram below shows the two #8 & #9 springs that should be in place and make your centrifugal advance mechanism 'spring back' when the cam is turned as the gear is held. If you remove the #7 point plate ... you can get at the centrifugal advance parts.

The following thread has all of the timing data for your engine, and the advance curve for your distributor ... which sould be checked after you get the 'springiness' back in the mechanism.
