Does anyone use Bluetooth to place calls in a 911?
 

I'm planning on getting a new head unit (HU) for my 3.2 Carerra soon.

It would be slick to be able to place calls through the head unit. But I wonder if the acoustic environment in my car isn't just too damn noisy to allow this.

Is anyone out there using a BT HU to place calls, and are people able to understand you?

No problems in my 911's. both are pretty loud but my parrot asteroid radios handle the noise cancellation pretty well.

i'm using an alpine head unit with remote mic and it seems to be okay. no one has complained yet, at least.

phone is held in place with this. works well, easy to see and use the phone. only downside is it blocks view of the vent panel.

I recently installed a Sony radio, can't remember which one. My car is too loud to use the mic when it's clipped to the visor so I just keep it clipped to the shifter lever. When I want to use it, I just hold the mic up to my mouth. It's not a great solution but it works.

installed a Kenwood unit in mine a few months back. It seems they can hear me fine. Only issue is hearing them, particularly on warm days with the windows down.

My suggestion is to never accept or make a call while the car is rolling. All handsfree does is make sure you have both hands on the wheel when you hit the car in front of you.

Put in a new head unit a year ago. Kewood model that came with BT. I figured I'd give it a try. Windows up you can have a conversation but people say "what is the noise in the background???" Windows down is hopeless. I did find it has an annoying default "feature" where it auto-answers.

I agree with the sentiment that 911 time is my time. I decided to leave the mic installed just in the off chance that I might need to answer the phone if someone REALLY needs me.

Hey, does this happen to anyone else? Wife tells me I should never answer the phone while driving (even with hands free) but then doesn't understand why I won't won't answer her repeated calls when I'm driving? It's like some kind of sick test! :D

I use it to answer the call, and politely ask if I can call them back in a few minutes. For $150 installed it was totally worth it.

Tried BT in my Elise and it worked great when the car was sitting still. Figure the same dynamics would be in effect for the 911. They can call me when I am in the GTO.

Do you also refuse to speak to passengers while driving? Too dangerous?

Yeap, even with top off :D just make sure your mic has the foam filter, it helps cut the ambient noise down for the reciever of your call.

Thanks for the feedback, and words of wisdom. I don't like talking on the phone at all, even less when driving. Where I live now its forbidden (verboten) and completely impossible anyway.

That said, if BT can make the occasional quick answer (like Driver X describes) less difficult, it might be work a few extra bucks.

Depending on the situation, yes. What many people fail to realize, and it boggles my mind that they don't, is that having a conversation on the phone while driving is RADICALLY different from having a conversation with a passenger.

Anyone who is honest with themselves will realize and admit that after having a cell phone conversation, they will not have a clear recollection of what was happening around the car while they were on the call. The brain is driving on limited autopilot when you are having a phone conversation.

That's all I wanted it for. Quick 15 second call with one touch a button. If it's important, I'll pull over & return the call.

This is spot on - I've done both, and there is absolutely no comparison between the two.
