I picked up this 84 Carrera where the original owner has never rebuilt the transmission and has 325k miles. His records show a shift coupler and 2 clutch replacements. Is this possible? Has anyone heard of other G15s that has lasted this long? I am wondering whether his luck may become my ticking time bomb!

I do want to add that the engine was completely rebuilt at 307k and the G15 still shifts smoothly. Occasional 1st to 2nd pull that feels forced, but not a grinding sound.

Its a 915 gearbox and if he drove the car well and serviced it regularly I'm not too surprised. I would change the gear oil for sure and just drive it. Its not that huge of en expense to freshen up a 915 box when the time comes. You might want to replace all of the bushings related to the shifter and coupler, their probably worn by now.

Start saving. When it comes time to rebuild it you won't just be doing synchros and dog teeth. You will be doing gears, bearings and pretty much everything.
