Helmet to Helmet Intercom System Recommendations
 

Hi Guys

I've got an event coming up the first part of August, and I'll be in need of a helmet to helmet communication system for two full face helmets. I've looked around online quite a bit, but haven't found anything economically priced. I'll likely only use the system for one day, so I'd rather not spend $300.00 on a system. Does anyone have any recommendations on a complete system for a budget of around $100.00 to $150.00? I don't need any FM radio or cell phone inputs, just a system that's always on when the switch is on, and allows for full duplex conversations.

Good luck finding something of quality in your price range.
I use Sena SMH10 for helmet to helmet communication with my wife on the bike, but as you stated it is more in the $275-300 range.
Are you going to use this for a driving school session?

Yeah, I'm definitely finding all kinds of $300.00 options. The Sena systems do look nice, and have positive reviews.

I'm actually entered in the Sandhills Open Road Challenge in Nebraska Home | Sandhills Open Road Challenge | Arnold, Nebraska. My father is my navigator, and we'd like to be sure we can easily hear each other. It should be a fun event!

I had a couple of Motorola FRS two way radios. The ones you buy at Walmart, etc. Mine had VOX control. Bought a couple of throat mics with earpiece. The kind Spec-Ops wear. Cheap. Works. Within your budget.


Also...I've used these on my snowmobile. Worked well.

there is the UCLEAR bluetooth communication system and it would be great for your intended use. intercom, as well as all the regular bluetooth options your phone has. price is starting at 129 i believe it is (per unit) or a dual pack at a bit over 200. although the UCLEAR UBC100 plus system would be the best value for overall product. the base model 100 would be fine.
there i also the blinc M1 system for about 120. also at cycle gear.

I use a Chatterbox to instruct at driving schools, works fine, should be within your budget.

I use chatterbox's Tandem pro 2. A small box clamps to my helmet along with mic and speakers. Student unit plugs into box on my helmet. It is pretty simple and sound quality is very good.

Chatterbox Tandem pro 2 is what I use as well. Relatively affordable and works well.

For Drivers Ed - Started with the: Nady (PMC-2X) units , they last about 3-4 years.
Small, simple, good units.

Moved to the Chaterbox helmet to helmet, both using the student ear/mouth piece. They have lasted for more than 10 years for up to 5 weekend events per year. Got a back up sender unit "just in case" the battery goes flat mid event.
(Have only used the back-up unit once).

3M Peltor is the standard. The noise cancellation in the mike is amazing. I have their bluetooth headset (same basic technology) and I use it at the shooting range and the people can hear the guns firing but it doesn't interrupt the conversation and I can talk in a normal voice. At freeway speeds in my crappy little truck people can't even hear that I'm driving.

Peltor isn't the cheap side of the range but it is one of those things that it works so well that you just can't argue with it. If you look at incar videos where they worried about sound quality (good example is TopGear) you will see that they usually go with the Peltor openface ralley helmet because the sound quality is great, they can just take one off the shelf, and it shows the driver's face for the camera.
For more serious stuff they have a kit to install into a full face helmet.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up ordering the ChatterBox Tandem Pro 2. I just couldn't justify spending any more for one event. I appreciate the help!

I have ordered and used two sets of these. About $100 for a pair (don't delay shipping by ordering the ones shipped from China!) There are some problems with electronics and construction but at this price it is forgivable. I set them up for our tandem bike. Used them for a DE event, brought them skiing - it really increases the enjoyment when you can communicate easily. Skiing with my buddy in Tahoe was great.... lost battery power and we were sad. Good noise cancelling until the foam cover came off one of the mics. Also used for communication during a school play. I adapted them into a headphone shell, earwarmer band, velcroed onto bike helmet straps, my driving helmet etc. Not bulletproof but they would satisfy your needs.
