Fabspeed Pre-Muffler Question

I recently bought a secondhand Fabspeed cat bypass from a member on the Pelican parts Porsche forums.

I have to say that this looks and feels like a great quality piece. My question is that there is a rattle from inside the pipe, perhaps from loose packing. Is the packing welded in place? If so, is there a way to reweld it? Or should I get it there with a long screwdriver or similar tool and work it completely loose and remove it?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Cheers

I am intrigued with this inquiry.

First, is the noise your hearing with the unit installed and car running?

I purchased one new a couple years back and in the last few hundred miles of driving thought I was developing an exhaust leak. After going over the entire system methodically with a flashlight for an hour could find no evidence of carbon slipping out of anywhere.

I've also tried to find the source while running but no luck.

The sound mine makes is like a metallic slapping noise, which is not consistent with an exh leak as it has no real rythm and only seems to occur when the car is hot. Not detectable when cold start-up.

Car is currently at an awesome shop for a whole other problem and I mentioned this for a "while you've got it" look over. The shop owner immediately asked me if I had cat-delete/premuffler installed... They have another 3.2 w a premuffler there currently thought to have an exhaust leak and the noise was traced back to the P-M...

Haven't installed it yet, it's planned for the weekend. I can hear the rattle when I shake the pre-muffler.

Cheers

I have the fabspeed pre-muffler. I don't think it has packing, but does have a coarse metal screen baffling in there.

How accessible are the innards using a flashlight?

On the exhaust leak issue, I did have a bit of a hassle getting mine to seal at the flanges on the engine side. Ended up using regular gaskets vs the fabspeed copper ones and some muffler goop from the local store.

Yes - that's exactly what it sounds like. Was yours rattly, or firmly attached inside?

I think it was spot welded. Are you able to look in? Now that I think about it you would have to look in from the muffler end not the engine side.

I have a brand new one sitting on the kitchen island - no rattle. There is internal baffling welded in place - sounds like a weld may have come loose.
