When making turns at slow speeds like 10MPH and less, maybe even 5MPH and less I often hear a noise when I turn the wheel. The car seems to steer fine otherwise and feels pretty good on the highway to me. But my friend who has driven a lot of 911's thinks there is some play in the steering. Do you think it is the rack? Any ideas?

Take a look underneath at your skid plate (protects the steering rack, fuel pump etc..) Missing any bolts? There should be 2 nuts and 2 hex bolts holding that in place. Check your wheel bearing play. Jack up the car and check if there is play by wiggling the wheel towards you and away (toward the center of the car). I may be way off, but I had a similar noise when turning, almost like a rattle and it turned out the a bolt was missing causing metal to rub metal.....bad bad bad.....

Also take a look at the top of the rack - where the steering shaft coupling bolts to the rack. If this is lose, it can produce a significant clunk on each rotation of the wheel [aside from being extremely dangerous].

My '85 did this too.
I thought it was my rack. Pulled it, LUBED he HECK out of it (used a WHOLE tube of moly-lube). Put it back in. STILL "clicked". I changed the tie-rods, still clicked. I removed my rack spacers, still clicked. I removed my shock tower brace, NO MORE CLICK! The secret was the shock towers were not torqued enough. Of course, I drove the car yesterday and now the click is back. I will re-torque the shock towers. email me and let me know what you find on yours, I will send you a beer! Do you have a swaybar? If so check the mount.

After installing my Momo wheel, and putting the horn ring on it, my wheel developed a bit of a "grind" when moving it. I removed the wheel, replaced the column bushing with the replacement steel unit (it just pounds in, displacing the original plastic bushing), and lubing the horn ring with plenty of dielectric grease, it still grinds. A little less, but I'm pretty sure it's the horn ring.
The replacement bushing lightened up my steering considerably, though. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 RIP The Porsche Owners Gallery |

I had removed the "skid plate" checked the swaybar mounts on mine. No luck.
BTW: mine does feel a little loose at hwy speeds. New tires almost took care of this. But there is still some, what I call, twitchiness. Mine also does not like bumps on the freeways, a type of bumpsteer, I suppose. I was thinking of taking it to a Porsche Alignment shop to see what's up ($afraid$ of this one $). Good Luck. Nick |
