rsr front, sc rear flares
hi - dunno if this is a dumb question. I like the look of the st recreations that are currently happening all over. from what I can understand the st 'standard' is rsr 9" front and st 10" rear (ie, the rears are an inch narrower than rsr and an inch wider than rs/sc). my question is: has anyone just slapped some 9" rsr front fenders on an sc with a long-nose conversion hood? 9" square setup. would it look off? I ask as swapping fenders is one thing, adding rear flares is another.
I tried searching and couldn't find anything. perhaps because it is a foolish question. |
there are pics of a car somewhere on this forum where somebody did just that. imho- it just looks wrong !
SC flares are 8" with a thin outer flange section, whereas ST and RSR and turbo all have a more prominent outer flange area (of differing shapes) and are at 9" btw if you want to do your own ST style without spending the bank on the right flares ($3600-ish currently) , get a set of FOUR turbo front flares and use those. You can narrow the fronts just slightly so you end up with a little bit narrower front note that i said ST style not actual ST; that takes some metal beating and reshaping to get that |
thanks for the info, I was thinking it would look wrong and front-heavy. actual 'st' is not required for me; the right front/back proportion is the quest. i'd read that the 930 front flares fit on the back quite well. i'd also read of someone rolling out their rear sc fenders to get more width at the back - is it possible to punch them out enough to make a noticeable difference?
thanks all. |
"punching them out" is a tricky term ! If you don't have metal shaping experience , or access to someone who does; you may end up with vastly different results side to side, front to back .
If its a budget deal, then consider finding a metal shaper that can modify the front slightly and leave the back alone. Do a search here for Craig T and his green machine. The front fenders have been custom flared and are proportional to the rear |
what about RUF rear flares? I think those are a bit wider than the SC but narrower than the Turbo flairs (as in Rick Flair, the nature boy:) )
if money is an issue...then real RUFs are out of the question. any aftermarket products for this? |
also, i didnt know that there was an actual standard for ST flares...like it was a free for all. HOWEVER, i really like this guys interpretation!!!

Real Ruf flares , if available, will not be cheap. But probably less than ST flares ! The ruf flare is very subtle. so it not dramatic. A good panel guy can add material and "stretch" the SC/ Carrera flare into something ST-ish (see ivory car pic where we did an early "rally" look and left the front alone)
The ST flares were indeed hand made at the factory, but they became "standardized" right around when the 72 model was offered. Of course there were always exceptions to the rule, right? :Dhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375118054.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375118100.jpg |
thanks all. I found the craig t thread where they worked the oem fenders and quarters:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/646800-my-backdated-hot-rod-project-underway.html looks to be an intense amount of work, but excellent result when done property. something about the st flares looks right; odd that Porsche didn't maintain that profile. |
that orange car is sweet...
