Tiptronic vs. Manual

I've been looking at getting a 964 or 993 in the next few months & have come across a lot of cars with the Tiptronic trans. What's the consensus on the auto for a daily driver & occassional weekend track car? I've never drive an auto Pcar & was wondering if I'd get bored with it quickly. On the plus side my wife would be able to drive the tip. Also, it seems the tip cars are a few thousand less than a comparable manual.

I was never a fan of the Tip trans untill I went to a Porsche AX driving event that had all tips. Imade multiple runsin a 997, a Boxter and a Cayman real hard thru the coarse and was very impressed. Obvioulsy the trans has changed alot from the 964 but If I came accross a real deal on a tip whne I'm back in the market I wouldnt hesitate. I've seen decent 964 tips in the teeens.

Is there still a "fun factor" when manually shifting or did you leave it in the auto mode only during the AX. I've driven a BMW with there version on the tip & I was quickly bored with the shifting & ended up driving in the auto mode only.

I have AX'd the wife's 993 with a tip once. I would not recommend leaving it in auto. You would jump up in gears way too quick I'd think.

It shifts fine manually during an AX and was a lot of fun. It was definitely a challenge though getting used to the steering wheel shift buttons while trying to negotiate wheel position along the course though.

I have always been a manual guy but the reality for me is that the tip in the 993 has not been the put off I originally thought it would be. I just stick it in manual mode and use the buttons on the wheel most all of the time.
