Grinding with shifting to second
I have a standard 1969 shift mechanism. I just changed the bushings in the shift mechanism and adjusted the shifting. Shifting is the best it ever has been.
I always had the possibility of grinding on the reverse gear when shifting to second. Is this a shift mechanism adjustment of a malfunctions reverse block in the tranny or??? Steve

It seems likely to me that this coud simply be an adjustment issue, but I know tat 2nd gear sycro issues are common on 901's

It's your second gear syncro that is weak and causing the grind. A change of oil might help as the syncro band is very sensitive to extra slippery oils. Swepco might make a difference as well as slowing down your shift.

You are catching reverse on the way to 2nd? You are pushing the shifter too far north on the way out of first. Could be either user error or adjustment.
You can't speed shift a 901 1st to 2nd. Pull it out of first, and let the shifter springs pull it to neutral in your hand. Then push it into 2nd. Also make sure your mounts are good. When I bought one of my cars it had a crunchy 2nd. I went to change the oil because I had no history on it. It was missing a mount bolt. Replaced the bolt and the problem went away. |
