72' wide body w/ 2.7 - thoughts?
Hi all,
Thank you for all the replies on the white elephant I posted before. I was hoping to get similar feedback on this one. Porsche 911t What I know: fiberglass conversion, 2.7, 915. That's really about it. Im heading to Myrtle Beach this week on vacation and the seller said he would meet me half way to MB to show me the car. So we made tentative plans to view Sunday. Thoughts on grabbing this for 16? Was thinking I could roll with the 2.7 and swap with a 3.2 when ready, and if i want more power. I know nothing about the 2.7's. Is there anything in particular I should be asking the seller about his motor? What work is needed or should be confirmed in order to have a good 2.7? Did have a seperate question for y'all...could I run AC in this car if I bought a 3.2 with AC components? Thanks again all! Your comments are greatly appreciated. Looks like a much more honest car IMO.
You could run A/C but might have to get creative with pump/condenser brackets/placement as they are clearly not there now.

This car needs a serious inspection for rust, and then inspect it again for rust. The L/R motor mount has what looks like rust on it. I would take that as an early indication of general condition. What is the motor in the car ? what year car is it from. What engine management systems were swapped over.
Headstuds / re build data ? On this car AC would be the last thing I would think about. Just my 2c but unless you are one of those weekend cruisers who tootles along at 30 mph puffing a stogies and waves their hands in the breeze I would stay away. In the end they are all 20k+ cars. Its just a question of when you want to spend the $. In this market 16 will get you a tidy stock SC driver with a few needs |

How do you know it's a 2.7?
The '72 came with a 2.4. The 2.7's ('74-'77) had a green cover, not red, but it could have been painted. That car has an 11 blade fan (2.7 had a 5 blade stock, but were often changed to 11). That said, the 2.7's had some overheating issues, especially the later years with thermal reactors. The 2.7's all had CIS injection, not carbs, but many have been converted. The 2.4 T's had carbs (except the '73.5 with CIS). Check everywhere for RUST, seriously... especially where the body was cut up to put the flares on. Last edited by tcar; 07-29-2013 at 08:16 AM.. |

the hard thing about that car is that someone took a long hood, made it a short hood and added tons of 80's look to it.
All in all, those changes diminish the value hugely.. as was already said, Rust, Rust, Rust... To me that car would need to be; rust free, and to be used as the basis for a RS look. But, I'd have to get it super cheap because converting it back to long hood status will be a serious undertaking. if you want an early car, I'd look for a clean T, if you want a later, short hood, I'd look for a clean SC or Carerra |

IMO, sad to see a 72 converted this way . . .

I was thinking the same about buying it cheap and making the changes to bring it to an RS / IROC look.
I've concluded that I will not get the right wide body car for under 20k. Going to sell my roundie 2002 and increase my budget to high 20's. No cigars, no 30mph weekending here, I'm a past SCCA champ in Sports 2000 that is dying to feel some real speed again. I laugh at those tool bags too, but have to respect their taste in cars! |
