Need Help on my Whale Tail Grill

The previous owner added the turbo look to my 911. The whale tail looks factory but the grill underneath does not. And it makes a bunch of noise. Can someone point me in the right direction on how I should fix it or bring it back to factory so the grill doesnt make so much noise? any alternatives to factory grill?

The part that is making so much noise is the chicken wire stuff underneath fiberglass opening. That stuff needs to go but I'm not sure what to replace it with. Do I even need it?

The factory grill mesh looks just about the same as what you have on yours. How does it make noise? Does it holler in your ear, "add a turbo to me, now!"?.

I think it's because the wire mesh is not secure. it just rattles.... like someone hitting a fence.

I just took a look at mine and here are a couple of differences -

The factory mesh is two pieces that are secured in many more places than yours is (your tail is even missing a rib that the halves are screwed to).

The OEM mesh pattern is more "square", were as yours is more rounded.

I'll post a picture.

Obviously, I have the OEM a/c condenser there, and also a custom intercooler shroud that I made, but I think you can still see the differences. Particularly note the absence of the rib that runs front to back, to which the grill pieces are attached, on your tail.

The grille from my 964 Turbo wing is shaped/formed, rather than being dead flat, so that it looks like it's been formed around the wings grille openings....wondering if that would be the case on yours as well...Mines apart at the moment, I need to repaint the grilles, so will try and remember to take and upload some pics so you can see what I'm on about!

Cheers
Spencer.

Your mesh looks like metal lath, a construction material for plastering.

I don't know what the part would cost from the dealer, but I see a lot of dollar signs. You could remove it, shoot flat or semi-gloss black. Then run a bead of silicone along the ribs in the tail and reattach the screen. That should get rid of the rattling.

No, that is a Turbo tail - sometimes called a "Tea Tray". A "whale tail" is much different in shape and size and is also called a "Carrera tail". The turbo tail is much larger in order to accommodate the Turbo's intercooler.

The OP incorrectly called it a "whale tail".
