930s steering wheel installation questions....
I will be putting in this wheel next week when it arrives and I checked out the tech article regarding the install. The article talks about clearance issues b/t the wheel and the dash being a problem. I ordered the hub adapter as well because of this. But looking at the pics in the article, it seems the original steering wheel in the article car was closer to the dash to begin with than mine is? My car is an 85, and I remember recently sitting in an 86 wondering why the wheel was much closer to the dash than mine? Are the dashes different in some way? How 'bout the steering wheel/hub? I wonder if it will even be necessary to use the adapter on my car? What's the deal?

I just took a measurement for base line purposes: At 12:00 on the wheel, I have a good 3" from the lower/inside part of the wheel to the dash. If anyone could be so kind as to check their stock carrera wheel and see if this is what you get I would appreciate it.

Mine is 2 1/8" From the forward side of the wheel to the dash. Or 2 1/2" from the center of the wheel to the dash. Shouldn't we be using metric?? HA HA.
Where did you buy your 930 wheel from? I would like to see it after it's installed. I wont be able to make the get together on the Sept 15. I'll be in LA for AutoFest. ------------------ Derk Pitt 88 Carrera Coupe |
The wheel with the adapter fits my 78 SC with plenty of room to spare. It is simple to install and it looks great. The only thing is that its a smaller diameter wheel and it makes the guages slightly more difficult to read. I still love it....TargaEuro

Same here as TargaEuro. You won't have any install problems, R22. You need the correct hub adapter for your car. Some persons who had clearance problems, most likely had the wrong adapter.
The install should be a snap. If you have any problems, send me an e-mail. You will like this wheel. Unlike most of the others, it's a quality piece that looks factory issue. I get a lot of positive comments on mine. ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website |
R22- Your car most likely came from factory with "extended hub" option,(don't know the option #, but dealer could confirm w/ cardex sticker on inside of hood or in warranty book), this put steering wheel further from dash for tall customer who puts seat way back. I do not know how or whether this affects aftermarket wheel install.
