Targa rear parcel shelf

I recently purchased an 84 911 targa, and the rear parcel shelf was sitting higher in the back than it should. When I removed it, I saw a one inch think foam rubber spacer was attached under the shelf behind the stock rear speakers. I assume this is what's causing it to sit too high. Is this the way they were originally made or was this added by a previous owner? I'm tempted to simply remove this piece (~1x1" by 12" long), but thought I'd check with others if this s there for some reason. The speakers are only 1 3/4" deep, so I don't think they're causing the problem with the fit.

Thanks for any advice.

I have just been working on my 87 targa and removed the rear sound mat and there was certainly no spacers of any sort installed. The mat is heavy and about 1/2 inch thick - sits directly on rear shelf. The factory speakers sit on top of mat

On mine, or rather under mine is a 2 inch thick/tall piece of foam that goes across the whole width of the shelf. I believe mine to be original and only presume it is give clearance for speakers. If you think there is enough clearance to cut the foam down, go ahead, it's your car.

Rear deck

I assumed that it must have some purpose, but seems to hold the shelf up too high. I will try to remove it, fit the rear deck piece, and see. It would be easy enough to reinstall if needed, or use some heavy duty roll weatherstripping to build up the height if necessary. The heavy back pad that lays on the metal firewall should be enough for sound deadening, so it's time to play.

I don't remember this much grief with my old 75 Targa. Life was simpler then!
