SC and Carrera Tail Light Lens

I am trying to understand the use of all red and red/yellow tail light lens over the years in various 911 models. What was the standard for SCs and Carreras? Was there a difference in US models vs ROW?

See for example - red/yellow on red 81 SC and red only on slate blue 84 Carrera. Sorry for the really bad photos.

Can anyone clarify usage? Thanks.

Red-only was for the USA - All red was traditional here in the very early years, and then when red rear side markers became required in '68, all red was the easy way to do that. I believe the RoW cars always had red/amber.

Amber was, or still is, manatory in Germany so not to confuse dirctional lights (amber) with braking or position lights (red). I think in Italy the directionl lights are clear.

Is that still true? I ask because so many new German cars (VW, Audi, BMW, M-B) have reverted back to all red here in the USA in the last few years.

I am not sure about today's rules. But just because VW, Audi, BMW, M-B cars have all red rear lights in the US does not mean they are not partially amber in Germany. The indicator lights were made and still are different for different countries.

Yup, I agree. Just seems silly to me for these companies to tool up for separate colors for the US when we have all gotten used to amber indicators. Why change back to something totally unique here.

It is. You can genrally tell which German cars are American spec here in Germany by the color of the rear turn signals. It's an indication of which drivers to keep an eye on!
