What is wrong with my clutch cable installation (pic)?

Hi guys,

The clutch on my 1973 911 T wont engage. It is really strange, because the clutch pedal feels like normal, it just wont engage.

What I can see is that the clutch arm has the wrong angle, hence the pipe parts to offset that. I thought it should work anyway, good enough for a test drive, but maybe the arm cant travel long enough? I dont have a c clip remover of that size....

I have a different year gearbox, I believe it is a 1974 magnesium housing trans in the car now. Could that be the reason the clutch cable housing looks too long?

The car starts up and sounds great, so I think I got the release fork and bearing together correctly.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Regards,

Johan

It looks like the release arm is incorrectly positioned on the shaft and can't move far enough to free the clutch. You shouldn't need the spacers.

Ok, thanks! Need to go out and buy a new c clip remover then....

How do you feel about the slack in the cable housing? Or maybe you say cable cover or cable guide in the US?

Regards,

Johan

I'd make sure the fork is engaged with the TOB & pressure plate. The arm should be angled WAY back and take up a lot of the extra slack you have in the cable.
If it's engaged correctly, then as stated above, remove the arm and rotate it back.

Good luck!

Looks to me like the clutch fork was never engaged with the throw out bearing when the gearbox was connected to the engine. Its probably just swinging around in the gap between the clutch and the trans, luckily. Easy to check, drop the starter out and have a look, or even more simply, if you can move the clutch fork more than about 2-3mm in each direction by hand, its not engaged.

The reason for the appearance of "slack" in the cable housing is that it is supposed to be routed above the throttle bell crank in an arc like fashion (you have routed under it in your pictures).

Hi,

Your clutch cable is improperly routed. Here's a shot of my 1973 clutch Cable routing:

Just some Cosmoline and road grime.

If you like, you can swing on by and detail the underside of my car.
