I'm refurbishing a 1973.5 T steel gas tank. Most of the foam gasket sealing it to the body had long since either crumbled or returned back to petroleum. However, the thin layer of adhesive that stuck the gasket to the bumpy PVC coating on the tank flange remained behind. It has resisted lacquer thinner, methyl alcohol, mineral spirits, acetone and scrubbing with soap and water. I didn't want to use methylene chloride (paint stripper) as most of the PVC coating is in good shape and I'd like to keep it. I am now using the citrus oil based "Goo Gone" and it is softening the adhesive but it still has to be laboriously scraped, rubbed or picked off as "crumbs". This is really time consuming on the bumpy PVC surface. Does anyone know of a good way to remove this adhesive? Thanks, Jim

Jim,
Have you tried 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover? Its useful stuff for any number of jobs. 3M part number is 051135-08984 for a 32oz can. Most local Carquest and Napa stores stock it, or you can order it from Car Care Specialties for about $12.00. Good luck, Tim
