question about enrichening fuel mixture
Can someone tell me the pros and cons of enrichening the fuel mixture in an '83 3.0 SC engine? For example, would there be a horsepower increase at the cost of fuel mileage? Also, how is it done, i.e. tools, where to put what -- stuff like that.
Thank you.

To enrich you mixture you will need a CO analyzer and the t-handle allen wrench that Pelican sells.
If the plug that covers the mixture screw access hole is still present you will have to remove it. Disconnect the O2 sensor and leave it unplugged even after you are finished with the adjustment. The frequency valve will run in open loop but that won't hurt the engine. Warm up the car. Insert the wrench into the hole and feel around until you get it into the screw. Turn it clockwise until you get 3-3.5% CO. Maximum fuel economy and low emmisions are achieved at an air/fuel ratio of 14.7/1. That's what you get with the O2 sensor hooked up, the mixture set at .6-.8% CO and the Lambda system functioning. At an air/fuel ratio of 12.5/1, or 3.0-3.5% CO you will gain torque but milage and emissions will suffer. Also, your car wil idle better and won't have that slight surge at low-speed, part throttle operation. I did this to my '82 SC this past spring and I'm never putting it back, that's how much I like it. PB |
