Oil in Throttle Body?
I recently purchased an 86 Carrera and I am in the midst of doing some house-cleaning on it. The car starts right up (cold or hot), but the idle seems odd, in that when cold, it drops rather fast but not die on me. When doing the house-cleaning, I noticed that the hose that connects to the idle control valve and throttle has oil within them! Is this normal? Also, I did notice that they the PO (or someone) overfilled the car with oil...is this part of the reason its smoking? Pics will follow.....

Hi

you will notice oil in all the breather hoses. The engine will run better with that oil cleaned out of the hoses.
If the car has too much oil, drain and refill to the proper level. The engine must be at operating temp to achieve a proper oil fill.

Not uncommon at all for a Carrera that was overfilled with oil. I found the same thing with my '86 when I went through and replaced the intake gaskets. Both halves of the intake had oil pooled in the plenums. No overfill on my watch so no telling how long it had been there.
One thing to check. There is a breather hose that runs from the oil tank filler next to the back of the 90* rubber boot over the throttle body. There should be a restrictor in that breather hose about an inch from the filler neck. It's a simple reversed cone that is supposed to allow vapor from the oil tank but not oil. You may want to pull the end of that hose and confirm the restrictor is in place. Plenty of threads on both of these if you search. -J

how many miles? not to scare you, but it can also be oil blow by. compression past the rings blows air out of the case along with oil and it ends up in the intakes system.
a compression and leak down will give you a better idea of whats going on, plus if you just bought it, its alsol nice to have a reference on the condition of the engine.
