Loose Plug Identification ?

I was cleaning up my engine bay and found this loose plug.
My car is a 1980 911sc with original 3.0 engine.

On my 1980 911 SC, that plug is connected to the external voltage regulator, as seen in the photo below. My understanding is that 78-81 had external voltage regulators, while 82-83 had alternators with internal voltage regulators. Looking at the photo that you provided, I do not see an external voltage regulator, so it is possible that you may have a newer style alternator installed.

It went to the (now absent) external regulator.

External vs internal

OK I think I understand.
The VR must be part of the alternator now.
