Air Conditioning Expansion Valve location?

I'm told I need a new expansion valve in my AC system. After I get the freon removed from the system by a suitable AC shop, I figure I can replace the valve myself. Can anyone tell me exactly where it is and can it be removed without removing the entire evaporator? I hear the valve can be accessed by opening the compartment underneath the hood?

I changed the TXV on my 82 SC a couple years ago when I redid the a/c system. I got the valve, and other parts, from Griffiths, they advertise in Pano. Porsche wants 5-600 for OEM. Griffiths was less than 200, maybe 140? Changing the valve is a bear because of the tight working conditions and being on your knees in the trunk just adds to the fun.
Probably best to keep women and children out of the garage.

Hello

It sits a top from the evaporatorcase in the smugglers box.

You have to remove the hose and then you have to remove the isolation material. Then you will see the EV. It is part 20.
It is a bot tough to get into the case opening with a normal spanner so you have to modify it by cuting down the outher flanges. Or remove the top from the case.



Don´t ask me for spanner sizes. I think you need 12/14 or 13/15 mm, later had 22mm.

If your system is now allready open i would go for the full way and pull the complete evap case from the bay open it, oil the fanmotor and clean the evap. Thats some 2-3 hours more work but pays back on the long run.
Also best time to switch over to the R134 a ( Ok rubber barrier hoses are better so you run into to much money )

Thanks! Actually though I took the easy on the hands but hard on the wallet route and took the car to a reputable shop to have it converted to fr12 and the system checked for leaks to find out where my R12 going. While diagnosing the system they found one of the LONG hoses was leaking so they're replacing that as well as the expansion valve, dryer, flushing the system, yadda, yadda, yadda... I was totally unprepared for the $$$$$$ amount they're charging me to do all of that but at least it will be done right and our current 98 degree temps will be a bit more bearable! This is the first time I've paid someone else to work on my cars in the past six years!
