Cam timing but not your average situation or question
 

Wanted to get some opinions here... I am trying to determine if I need to set my cam timing again after an unfortunate turn of events had me re-re-building my engine. yes that's two "re-'s"

I had to do a rebuild due to losing a rod bearing and when it was all done and while mating the trans the case broke. The rebuild motor never even made it into the car. So I got another case and started over. All the same pieces with the exception of some gaskets and of course the new case.

On the tear down I took both banks off as a a unit per side. Heads, cam towers, chain boxes, even exhaust. Haven't touched anything in the towers and the timing was spot on. So now I am wondering if there is any reason I would have to pull the rockers and go through the cam timing process again. The timing isn't that big of a deal but doing all those rockers again is something I'd love to avoid.

I keep trying to think through this and am convincing myself I don't have to time everything again but I would much rather do that instead of re-re-re building this thing in the not so distant future I am wrong. So.... what do you guys think?

Very easy to be off by a tooth or 2 on the chain sprockets.
Why chance it for the removal of 2 rocker covers.
I'd hate for your next post to be about pistons hitting valves....

Thanks guys. I think I over thought this and missed the obvious. Checking it is not a big deal at all. I think I had inherently been thinking about doing all the rocker arms because the few times I have done this has been during a build and that was always my next step. Not all the same step. Man, I need to find some engine anxiety meds.

yes, be careful. with all the rockers on , you can bend a valve. make sure all the plugs are out so you can feel if a valve hits

the best way to do it is with all the rockers in place. that way the cams stay put when you pull the pin. and yes, it needs to be re re done.
