I'm not too concerned about the rust as its minimal but it would need to be dealt with in the future. No sign of it anywhere beside the few rock chips and on the driver door sill. Still not major but there. I'm not concered about maintenance as I have always build my own motors, gearboxes and race car fab work so mantaining this thing should be no issue.

I'm hoping to drive a local fellows 964 c2 shortly to help make the decision. I know it's not a race car but after racing in the woods in a 4wd turbo rally car, it takes some grunt to get me excited. Hopefully we will see how the 964 compare shortly. I'm not really partial to one over the other.

Yes but once the 3.2 gets up to a certain speed then it will fishtail it's rear end and spin out. The new powerful cars also have a few hundred foot pounds more or torque. You cannot compare. It's like comparing a Bug to a Cayman. OK, a fast Bug.

If you're looking for the thrill of a 350 HP turbo 4WD rally car, you're bound to be underwhelmed by just about anything you're going to get into that's sub 100k in price.

What? That's a ridiculous statement. What certain speed are you referring to?

Huh? What are you talking about? Never "spun out" in my 86 and I've been driving it for over 15 years quiet aggressively. I've tracked the car, lived and driven all over the country and now live in an area that has some of the best twisties in the states; both high speed and low.

The car looks good...have it checked out and go for it if you like it.

McLaren-TAG 08-08-2013 12:25 PM

^^ if you've never spun it, then you don't know where the limit is!

ben parrish 08-08-2013 12:35 PM

never said the tail has not stepped out..just never "spun out". Did actually once in a 914..that was fun..didn't think it was gonna stop.:D

My business partner was always buying newer 911's so I got some seat time in the 964 and 996 and 997's - yes they are way more powerful but they really lack the rawness of the 3.2 driving experience. I suppose a 3.6 transplant in an 84-89 could get the best of both worlds.

There are two reasons for the back end to break loose, 1) it's your intention or 2) you don't know how to drive the car.

:D

This car was raw! Maybe I should build a 911 rally car...

I had a 2006 STi, modded of course. When I was thru, it was probably at 320awhp / 350awtq. The 911 is a different animal. Absolutely nowhere close to the speed and power or even agility of the STi... but the 911 puts a bigger smile on my face.

The only thing that makes this a $20k car is the rust. Without it, it's $25k+, easily. The market for low mileage original 3.2s, especially the G50's, has gone way up in the last couple of years. They used to be low 20's, now they're upper 20's and into the 30's for great examples. $20k is a GREAT deal for this car, provided that the rust truly is limited to only what's visible. That's the big question, and anyone considering this car has to investigate that thoroughly before buying it.

jeffbottman 08-08-2013 03:59 PM

I've owned my 3.2 for about a year now, and have enjoyed driving it way more than I had imagined I would. Drive it to work, on weekends, and sometimes aimlessly around the block, just because it makes me feel so good.

My question: Is this degree of fun higher in 911's than other (faster) cars? I've had little experience with fun cars prior to my 911 revelation, and wonder what more experienced drivers think.

I know this is a silly question .......

Nick Triesch 08-08-2013 04:12 PM

The Porsche 3.2 is very much fun to drive. But so are the modern really fast cars. My friends 300H.P. Cayman is like a little rocket. It just scoots and sticks like glue. And my another friend has a new Dodge Charger with a huge HEMI V8 and driving it is like being an Apollo space ship. So much torque.

SteamWolf 08-08-2013 05:27 PM

Nick, you really sound like someone that is yet to get their driver's licence.

rokemester 08-08-2013 05:34 PM

This started out as a little minor rust on the passenger side door sill. I'm praying that the driver side isn't going this direction. Cost me $1,500 for a quality fix!

Great car, wonderful engine.
255k here, no issues, valve guides are fine.

It does like to be tail happy, but all 911 ,s do that.
It will never handle like a 914 or the more modern version in the booster/cayman....but who cares.

I love cruising around in the 911 and beating the cramp out of the 914 as its more setup for racing...

Look at rokemester's post and pictures. That right there should tell you to forget about the car. Especially for $20k.

You don't list your location. I am assuming you are somewhere in the rust belt. I have never seen rust like that on ANY 3.2 carrera or SC that has been in CA all its life.

Look for a better example.

Also, I do not think the 964 in stock form has significantly more power than the 3.2. You really should start looking into a turbo charged model or the 993 to get closer to what you are looking for.

Update: I drove a '93 964 C2 last night that is owned by a local chap I met on rennlist. I asked him if he was interested in helping make the decision if I should continue looking for a 964 or pick up this '87. He offered me his keys in return for the ones to the M coupe. I took the 964 out for about 15 minutes and I must say that the power is better with the 3.6 and actually starting to fell pretty peppy. The brakes felt strong and the steering was better than that of 3.2. I know many people seem to love the manual steering, but too be honest it does not really add to the experience for me. I am guessing that the rack ratio on the 964 is actually quick due to the power assist and if thats the case it would be an important factor to me.

Thanks for all your input guys!
