Early 911 or 912 Tranny Puzzle

I’ve got a 1966 912 with a 5 speed gearbox, however the stamped transmission type number is clearly 902/0 (The tranny # 162014). All documentation that I’ve read indicates that the ‘0’ corresponds to a four-speed transmission. Isn't that right?

Is it possible to convert a 902/0 into a 5 speed? Why would someone want to do that? I mean, what would be the advantage of changing out the inner components of a 4-speed versus changing the whole transmission? Also, the date stamp is 10/66 which means someone changed out the tranny on my car anyhow since by Oct. 66 they were producing the 1967 model (strange people, thos POs!).
