Look what a freind gave me today!
A friend of gave me three cans of R-12 that he didn't have a use for. One of them was purchased originally on sale for $1.07. What a day!

John, you really need to learn how to pump up your story. You should have first told us about a friend of yours that knew an old lady that had some cans of freon in the garage. Her husband is dead and she doesn't know what the freon is worth, she just wants those damn cans out of the garage. Your friend is going to call you Wednesday at midnight to work out the details.

Better yet, you could have titled the post "I'm getting 3 cans of R12 for free on Sunday." Oh no, that wouldn't work - you really did get them.

Or you could say that you found a great can of R12 and put a deposit on it pending the PPI results. Then back out at the last minute and and lose the deposit.
Oh wait...that's *not* the way to do things Last edited by nostatic; 08-05-2002 at 03:48 PM.. |

All you guys are busted. There are ways to trace down career criminals like you.
So, what are you going to do with the R12? It's illegal so it must be the latest rave drug or something, right? Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

I remember back in the lost years we had an automatic BB rifle that used R12 cans as propellent. It could fire like 100 rounds per second or something ridiculous, but it would freeze up pretty quick. Of course being crack scientists we would heat the R12 cans up in hot water before use to get a bit more "kick".
Ahh, those were the days...BBs, hydrogen balloons, metallic sodium explosions... |

I hope you bought your friend a dinner...at least a "happy meal"? That's quite a gift.

nostatic,
How about chlorine smoke bombs? We used to take a cup of pool chlorine, put it on a sheet of newspaper, wrap it up and give it a shot of charcoal lighter fluid for a quick start. We'd light one of those up and high tail it out of there! Stupid things we did as kids ... now knowing it could have killed us makes it sobering (but it was fun as hell at the time!) Cheers,

naw, we preferred fire to smoke. Our big two were hydrogen balloons (generated in situ w/conc HCl and aluminum foil) and sodium bombs. Fill the balloons with the gas as it evolves, tie a string on it, soak the string in Ronson, light the bottom, and let it fly. Depending on the length of the strength you'd get a nice fireball about 50-100' up in the air.
The other was metallic sodium and water. The traditional demonstration consists of a small piece tossed into water...it fizzles around then explodes. We figured the key to a more violent explosion is high surface area and release under water. We used to use 5 gallon plastic buckets and put a few thin shavings of sodium on the bottom. Cover that with a baby food jar, then put a brick on top of that. Fill the bucket with water and you have 5 gallons of water covering the sodium. Only challenge was how to release it. Our solution was to roll an old bowling ball towards it and hit it with just enough speed to jar the brick off but leave the bucket standing. If you did it right you'd get a hellacious explosion, flatten the pickle bucket, and vaporize most of the water. the neighbors loved us... ![]() |

Ahhh- this brings back pleasant memories of the M100's with waterproof fuses. We'd duct-tape fishing sinkers to them, light 'em up and toss 'em in the pond for a nice depth charge. When the fish come floating to the top, you know you did it right.

Fun stuff. As kids my brother and I "borrowed" a whole keg of gunpowder (dad was into hunting and making his own shells) and made a pile in the backyard, just like in a Roadrunner cartoon. Then we made a "fuse" by making a little line of the powder running along some planks. You get the picture. Then we lit it up and WHOOSH! not an explosion but a huge fireball the size of the house.
Ah what we did as kids...I'm really surprised we didn't maim ourselves with some stuff we did. |

Somebody told me once that the SECOND most illegally imported substance into the USA is R12. I know a couple guys who have multiple five-pound bottles of R12 stashed for posterity. . . no doubt this will give us some fine "Found in a Barn" stories in the environmentally friendly years to come.

It's silly what you can make with even the safe and sane stuff these days...
A whole pack of silver sparklers (you know the ones that the little kids run around with) duct taped tightly together with one of them slightly protuding as the fuse will produce enough of a kick to rival an M-80... No joke.
