You can but there is a very good chance you will be slightly off regarding the valve timing.

I do not see how you could get the cam timing even close without a dial indicator. The dial blog and indicator is a cheap tool given the danger and consequences if you get it wrong. Even with the dial indicator it still took me a hour to get it correct

Not recommended for sure...

I would say there is absolutely no chance that you would even be close.

You set cam timing in two places.

Both sides will be a far ways away from being correct and the two sides will not match each other.

just use your eyecrometer

If one is asking that question, I would wonder how much one actually knows about what one is doing? Are you also torquing without a torque wrench?

If you do, please paint the fan red so I know to stay away if you decide to sell.

Of all the special tools needed, the Z block/dial gauge is probably one of the cheapest to DIY. Do a little searching. Dial gauges are cheap at places like harbor freight. There are a number of low tech, low budget Z blocks in several threads here. Bet you could put one together for less than $25.

Z block is unavailable here, can you point me to where I may be able to find/build a set of tools to do the cam timing? It's the one thing (so far) I haven't done myself.. Just need a Z Block and dial indicator?

He won't need to, it will be the engine with the fan that no longer spins...

Red fan haters aside...

Here's the post that has dimensions and pictures of the low tech, highly functional DIY Z blocks I mentioned.

Here are a couple other Pelican Parts threads on the same topic:

I sent the dimensions to a CNC buddy, lets see what he comes up with. Are all dial indicators the same diameter shaft (.375)?

tharbert 08-12-2013 06:49 AM

9.52mm or ~3/8" = standard stem size so .375 will fit nicely with a thumb screw to secure at the stem.
