Smuggler's Box - GASKET

Anyone have a source for the trunk A/C - aka Smuggler's Box - gasket?

My new A/C system, and especially the new evaporator, needs a nice tight enclosure.

Pelican just back orders on the gasket. I've been unable to find anywhere to buy new...

So - Sources, please?

Or, lacking that - successful work-arounds / use insteads?

Thanks!
Jim

Jim,

Try a dealer. I've bought one recently with no problem. Surely I didn't get the last one. Part number 911.504.491.02

Thinking outside the box (pardon the pun):if you can't find a factory gasket, maybe a rope gasket (like the kind used for a wood stove door) would make a good seal. It could be cut to any length.

Also, there is a adhesive backed foam weatherstripping at home and hardware stores. Some of it is pretty good. Might be resistant to tight radii, though. Could get you by until you find the factory stuff.

If I did not toss my gasket with the removal of the lid...you can have it...let me look for it.

Your evaporator housing provides all the sealing for your A/C system. It sucks in air from the passenger compartment through the intakes in the passenger footwell and driver footwell, pulls it through the evaporator and pushes it into the dash ductwork.

The smugglers box is open to the outside through the bottom of the car -- that's where the A/C hoses run. A perfect seal on the cover won't do anything to keep out outside air.

The foam that seals the mating of the evaporator housing to the footwells deteriorates over time and can let in warm outside air. You can remove the passenter air intake and redo it. The round driver footwell foam can't be accessed unless you pull the evaporator housing -- which you can't do unless you disconnect the A/C hoses.

So can anyone tell me what the dimensions of that round foam gasket is that seals to the footwells is or a picture of a good one on an evap box. I made up a gasket out of back pack foam (after making it thinner) and the box doesn't quite fit now. I guess I could remove and split the box again and view the actual gap between the box and the footwell tube. It seems kind of funky to just have the tube and box butt up against each other if the foam is thin.

Thanks, Gary

Ah, found the answer @ "81 sc evaporator box ports" thread.

Pelican is best for the DIY Porsche.
