Relay socket melted-wiring?

Hey,

I had my 84 Carrera cutting in and out on the road now and again for a few moments. It was always a breif intermittent, so it always came back quickly. Lately, it got worse. I read Wayne's 911 projects book, and it said to check the under seat DME relay and the red fuel pump relay. I did. The under seat I replaced, but when I looked at the fuel pump relay, it was stuck in the socket. The relay was fried, burnt, melted, and the socket was melted too.

I ordered a new socket from pelican (I had the new relays), but the new socket has five wires, and the old had only four, and two of the wires are a bigger gauge. I know I only need the four wires for a relay, but, can I use the five wire socket or is there some other part I should be using to prevent another meltdown due to the smaller wires?

Just want to be sure before I go into it.

Thanks

Did you make sure that they sent you the right one? Obviously something is wrong.....call them and give them the serial number that is on the back of the original one....

In all 3.2 Carreras ... the DME relay under the seat contains the fuel pump relay. If the red relay you are referring to is above the fuse panel ... it isn't for the fuel pump!

Red relays can replace any black relay as originally equipped from the factory ... the ony difference is the preesence of a quench diode inside the red relay case accross the relay coil for noise suppression purposes to eliminate potential problems with sensitive electronics.

Which of the seven possible relay locations is the burnt socket at? Not all locations are populated ... but are counted from the front of the car whether a relay IS PRESENT OR NOT!

The socket you were sent is a universal replacement, as all of the round, general purpose Porsche relays have five terminals ... in your rerplacement application you will just fold back and tape up the extra wire. You can identify which of the five wires go to terminals #85 & #86 (coil) and #30, #87a & #87 (contacts) with a multimeter set to the lowest Ohms scale or continuity function, if present. Your relays should have number labels on the underside next to the pins. The heavy wires should be for terminals #30 and # 87 ... the 'make' contacts of the relay.

Porsche Crest wiring

You better look at the 84 carrera wiring diagram in bentley. It shows one relay wired to the other on the fuse panel in the trunk. Also, read waynes book... More of the same.

I know all that both of you mention, and appreciate the help. The question is

Is there another part with larger diameter wires? Is the 4 wire socket available?

Thanks
