Weva Fun Run

So we wouldn't be confused about which fun run we are discussing, I started this thread. This run is open to anyone with a Porsche and will take place on August 18. We will meet near Charlottsville, Va. The route we will be taking will be through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery VA has to offer and some very exciting twisty hillclimbs. Bring a camera and we will make a couple of stops for photo ops. We will also stop in Warm Springs for lunch. I promise a very memorable ride and I hope all the guys I met at the original NOVA run can come!

Jim Richards 08-06-2002 03:21 AM

Hey Rob, I'm in. Sounds like a lot of fun. Any idea about the meeting time?

scphelps1 08-06-2002 07:32 AM

I just noticed you said you were meeting near Charlottesville. If so, I should be able to join you. I'm still trying to get some bugs worked out, but would love to go for a 'spirited' drive!

jpnovak 08-06-2002 09:48 AM

I might be in if we can tie it with a good lunch(so I can bring the wife along). Is there a winery or something I could stop at to help this situation? What about heading north from C-ville and pick up some of us on the road from DC? Maybe towards Luray or something? Cool.

Jamie

Jim Richards 08-06-2002 10:07 AM

Hi Rob,

I like Jamie's suggestion. What'ya think?

PORSHIN 08-06-2002 06:17 PM

Well guys, I will have to drive about 120 miles north to get to the meeting place and I just figured it would be about halfway in between us. I won't make you come any further south if you don't make me go any further north! LOL. I was thinking of meeting at 10:00 am so everyone would have time to get there without having to get up too early. At Warm Springs/ Hot Springs there are several levels of restaraunts. Ranging from The Homestead Resort for the high rollers, to a nice deli-type restaraunt with two other places in between. If we all chose different restaraunts or went in groups to different ones we could just meet back up at a certain time and designated place. They are all fairly close together and I seriously doubt if any one could get lost in that area unless they left their vehicle and wandered off into the forest and ....well you get the picture! Jamie, I'll check on the Wineries along the way I think there is at least one! And I'm going to bring my wife too if we can arrange for our daughter to stay with a friend for the day.

PORSHIN 08-06-2002 06:29 PM

Clayton, OOOOh a 930 eh? Yeah you've got to come! You won't have to worry about working those bugs out, you can just blow them out!
Jamie and Richard, if the planned route is going to keep you from being able to come, I can plan a more northern route. One note though, I don't know the area north of C'ville well enough to plan where to meet, stop, or what to expect along the way. Let me know your feelings about all that.

Jim Richards 08-07-2002 03:23 AM

I'm pretty flexible, Rob, especially after finding out last night that my wife will be in Colorado the weekend of the WeVA run. Let me know where the meeting place will be and I'll be there...

KFC911 08-07-2002 03:58 AM

Hey Poorshin, where y'at? I'm in Greensboro, and might be interested in heading north for a drive...(also, do you have any
favorite routes in the southwest VA area?). Thanks...Keith

PORSHIN 08-07-2002 11:52 AM

Jim,
Sounds great! I'll get details to ya.
Keith
I live in Bedford but we will be starting from Charlottesville,VA on this run. Do you think you can make it? Let me know if you can!

PORSHIN 08-07-2002 08:17 PM

OK so far it's Jim and I...Richard? You in? Marc? Keith? Tony? Clayton?

KFC911 08-08-2002 03:37 AM

For me, it's probably a 50/50 right now...need to see what develops and get my new tires installed (and an alignment too).
I'd sure like to go though...if not this time around, then maybe one in the SW Va./NC area? I'll probably ask again in another post, but does anyone know of a 'good' place to get tires mounted/balanced (w/o scratching the Fuchs), and an alignment done (does not necessarily need to be the same place) in the Greensboro/Triad area? Thanks...Keith

jpnovak 08-08-2002 03:54 AM

At this point I am in, My wife asks, ..."will I be able to take you driving in the mountains?" With a smile I say "of course." Please add me to the email list.

Jamie

I'm 90% sure I'm in. I am trying to get this thing to run cooler. Right now, I'm almost at the start of the red! I plan on trying some diagnostic stuff this weekend. If any of you have followed rarly's recent posts I will go in the same order, timing, mixture, idle. Speaking of which, do any of you have a gastester? I would like to know where I'm truly at!

Clayton

PORSHIN 08-08-2002 04:46 PM

Keith,
I don't know of anyone down that way to do your tires / alignment. But I do know some good roads in SW VA!

Clayton,
When your engine is getting hot, get under the right side of the car where the oil lines go to the front oil cooler and make sure they are very hot. If not, you could have a bad thermostat or a restriction in the lines. The other most likely culprit would be a lean fuel mixture...that will get a turbo hot real quick!
Rob

scphelps1 08-09-2002 06:53 AM

I posted a new thread this AM about my temperature issue. This weekend I can hopefully get some pieces off so I can see if there is anything restricting airflow through the internal cooler. The front lines are hot! I have tried going richer. I will also check the timing this weekend.

IT'S TIME!

OK everyone, the WEVA (western Virginia) fun run is this Sunday (8/18) it's not too late for anyone who wishes to join us! If you want to come along, just send me a message and I'll get back to you with info!
Rob

Doug E 08-16-2002 05:47 PM

Rob - hope you all have a great run. Sorry I won't be able to make it but I look forward to hearing about. :)

PORSHIN 08-16-2002 05:53 PM

Doug,
Thanks for the good wishes, I had really hoped you would come but since you can't, we'll tell you all about it! I'll come back up there next month if I can!
Rob

Jim Richards 08-16-2002 06:08 PM

See you Sunday...

PORSHIN 08-17-2002 12:09 PM

Anyone else who wants to come e-mail me before 9:00 and I'll get you details
Rob

Rick Lee 08-17-2002 02:45 PM

I am IN! I'm carvanning with Jim Richards. Jamie, if you're in, we're meeting at the Post Office where 28 & 29 meet in Centreville at 7:00am.

Jim Richards 08-18-2002 04:41 PM

What a great time! Rob picked a wonderful scenic route with lots and lots of twisties. We were all over the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest and a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you missed it...you missed it!

Rick Lee 08-18-2002 05:00 PM

Concur! It was a great drive and a total blast. I was worried about my oil consumption yesterday. But after 520 miles (since yesterday), I'm only down 1/2 qt. So I think I'm in good shape. Anyone who can make it, this same drive would be a total dream around late Oct. when the leaves are turning. I got a lot of great redlines on twisty turns today. My car is very happy now with me now.

surflvr911sc 08-18-2002 05:31 PM

Pictures??

Rick Lee 08-18-2002 05:49 PM

Pictures tomorrow.

I agree! The route was great Rob! The weather also cooperated for the most part. I have pictures that I will sort out and post tomorrow from work (much faster connection!). Right now I'm at 28,800!
Well, Maybe I'll post one teaser pic.

surflvr911sc 08-18-2002 06:13 PM

Look forward to the pictures guys! Sound like it was a lot of fun. I'm already starting to get the feeling for another run here in So. CA. As I resently found out, the only thing that beats you, your 911, and a fun road is to have more 911s w/ you.

PORSHIN 08-18-2002 06:16 PM

I had a great time and I'm so glad everyone else did! Clayton, tell Stacey I'm sorry if we made her seasick on those twisty roads! It was great to meet you two and also to see Jim and Richard again! We need to do this sort of thing more often! I'll post some more pics as soon as they are developed! Thank all of you for joining me!
Rob
