Great, another excuse not to go to Le Mans.
On the other hand, we may now see a Porsche entry in the Daytona 500. Tom |

Personally, if I had the bux and I was in th market for a touring car, a new 928 with a biturbo V8 would be THE e-ticket.

This got me to thinking about the possibilities with old 928's. These things can be purchased for pennies on the dollar. Has anybody ever "R-Grupped" one of these things? i.e.: strip out all the power-operated crap, take the gold chains/Rolexes/coke pipes out of the glove box, install RS-type door panels, lightweight seats, harness, lowered, performance exhaust, etc. I'll bet you could do up a heck of a car for under $10k! -- Curt

I always thought the 928 looked more "exotic" than the 911. Neat looking cars if done right. Lots of beaters around though.

Of course one of these things stripped down with a cage and slicks would probably win LOL ![]() |

Curt:
I like the way you think. Regarding the "new" 928, the Viper runs pretty well with a V-10 truck motor and my thoughts are that the TT V8 Cayenne motor is a bit more than the average truck motor. I have no problem with the Cayenne cynicism . . . I do think that one should drive one at speed and then post the criticism. Best, Kurt Future Cayenne owner and perhaps future owner of an R Gruppe 928, thanks to Curt! ![]() |

Hey Kurt, a buddy of mine had a 928S Euro (he just sold it a few weeks ago). But last year he hacked off the cobbled up US-conversion exhaust system on it (shortly after a thorough trouncing by the Gray Wolf I might add ![]() ![]() |

I wonder if they are going to build it on a Golf platform???
Anybody remember the Nordstadt V-8 Rabbits that were faster than 928's?? Of course ... only the outer skin was from Vw at the time! Not quite as exciting as the even earlier Super Beetle Cabrio with the mid-engined RS 2.7 drivetrain conversion, though!

Boom:
Just having some fun with you on the 'truck motor' comment. ![]() Probably, like you, I don't get too emotional over "pedigree". Heck, I thought a 928 V8 in a 911 might be an acceptable x-plant . . . I look forward to the thread of the fellow who decides to put that Cayenne twin turbo V8 into a rust free '72 T! ![]() Curt, we're in big trouble. I think we could have a pretty good time with a few hundred thousand dollars and a couple of nice shells . . . and perhaps a beer or seven. ![]() Can't get over how nice that red interior looks in your car. Early S Man, didn't BB drape that golf shell over the 928 innards? I have a picture of that car somewhere. I recall that the Golf/928 had better aerodynamics (lower Cd) than the 928 body. How about a '72 Pinto in stock garb sporting a 32v 928 motor? hehehe. Best to all! Kurt |

Actually, Kurt ... Guenther Artz had to add a bit of 'girth' to the Rabbit skin to fit over all of the 928 hardware! Here are a few of the details ...

I remember that 928/Rabbit now! Thanks for posting that Warren.
Kurt: there's a 928 donor car on eBay for $1300 right now. And here's what I think might be a good start on Gruppeizing it ![]() ![]() |

Curt,
You're bad . . . really bad. ![]() Now we need a shell; Should it be Gremlin or Pinto based? ![]() I think that nice aluminum Porsche motor needs turbos an each side - you know, "while we're in there" kind of mods. I think this 928 will need a hood scoop and the "mother of all intercoolers" intercooler. It is really fascinating contemplating a simple 928. The transaxle design will give balance and once we rip out all the servos and such the car could be special. If such lightweight and simple 928s are built and find the road/track, you, sir, are the father of such activity. Now you need to think of a name for your exclusive and "attitude free" club. LMAO, hehehehe! Best to you and yours! Kurt |

As for stripped down 928s, there is one that runs in Speed World Challenge GT class every once and a while. Not a front runner but an interesting car that looks like a blast to drive.
On the SUV front, if I were in the market, VW's Touareg version of the new truck seems more interesting for something that is actually going to be used as a truck. Check out this engine package: http://www.vwvortex.com/features/index_touareg_firstdrive.html "The 313hp V10 TDI is by far our favorite pick of all the models not because of the 313 horsepower but because of the 550 lb-ft. of torque. The V10 TDI model really moves off the line with big authority and literally pushes you back in your seat. It is also the quietest TDI we've ever heard and returns nearly 24 mpg combined cycle according to VW. Every journalist in attendance at the event echoed the same sentiment that the V10 TDI *is* the Touareg model to have." I would not mind towing my 911 to the track with one of these! ![]() Tom

To the real S-Man:
Thanks for the article. Amazing and wide! I still recall another 928/Golf built by BB AG. I need to dig through some books and find the car. I'm not quite as handy with my archives and scanner as you are. : ) Hopefully you are not melting in TX. My hometown of Dallas has seen some decent heat of late. Hopefully the bass and crappie are hitting before the sun rises. : ) Best, Kurt |
