Porsche Crest New to the forum/owner - 1975 911s Ice Green Metallic

Just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to the forum. I'm a new Porsche owner with a 1975 911s. It's been fun to drive so far but I do have a little oil leak.

The car runs well and on a hot day it stays between 180 - 190 degrees and the oil pressure shows a little than half; however, the green oil light comes on once its warmed up and I have an oil leak somewhere in the engine. I recently took it out and there was oil puddled on the right side looking at the engine. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike

Welcome, and that is really a gem of a car - sweet color, I love it.

Is the oil puddled on top of the engine tin, just beneath the spark plugs? If so, it could be from something as simple as spilling a bit of oil when filling the tank, to a hose lurking above that is leaking.

Can you offer some more detail?

On a hot day in NM you run 180 to 190. That's great. And good oil pressure, too. Wow.

Nice car!
Welcome.

Puddling oil on our cars is not to be taken lightly...
What else can you tell us about the leak?

Cool car!

Lot's of possibilities on the source of the oil leak. Could be as simple as oil return tube seals. Give Russ Kelso a call at Performance MotorCar Investments: more power for your Porsche....
Good guy & shop.

Are you coming to the 43rd Annual Corrales Roundup on Sunday August 18th?
Be cool to meet you and see the ice green in person.

Thanks for the help. I recently refilled the oil because it was low but made sure not to spill any and cleaned up afterwards. I took it out this morning to work (no issues getting there) and on the way home (15 min drive in stop/go traffic). When I got home, smoke was coming out from the engine where the oil was on the engine tin. I didn't notice any leaking but haven't done any further investigation. This weekend I'll clean it up and try to isolate it. Doube-checked the oil cap as well.

Type911 - I have not heard about the Corrales Roundup. What is it? I'm new to the area and just moved here.

Welcome, good looking car you have there.
Question: How did you check the oil to determine it was low?

I checked the dip stick (in the garage; flat and level). The engine was warm as I had just driven it but it was off.

Therein lies your problem.
Oil is checked engine running and warmed.
I think you've overfilled it a tad.

Ah! Thanks for the help. I hope it's that simple. I'll have to check it again this evening and possibly burn some more oil.

Welcome to the madness and Albuquerque's group of air cooled people. Recheck your oil engine running, level place and look for it to be in the middle of the stick...no higher !!

Following the over-filled oil idea, that car, I'm quite sure, has a drain from the air cleaner compartment (beneath the air filter, once you take off the snorkle) to drain off excess oil that might be blown into there - due to your possible over filling. This drain has a tube that goes to a gizmo (if your car still has it) called a 'dribbler'. It is a one-way rubber valve gadget that allows the extra oil to drain out onto the ground. Take a look in the air cleaner to see if there is a mess of oil.

Welcome! I have the same car! Though not as nice as yours! Color is fantastic. I fixed my oil leaks with a 3.2 swap. Also if you overfilled the oil it will be sucked into the air box. I keep mine slightly over half way between low and full on the dipstick - did so with the 2.7 as well. Btw, mine doesn't have an overflow of any sort.

Strange - I just noticed you have exactly the same aftermarket mirrors mine came with. Orig. it would have come with one chrome mirror. Wonder if they were a dealer option.

I had those same mirrors on my 1975 too. I changed them for a set of Durants. They look good but now I have the CSS (can't see.....stuff) problem.

Checked it out this weekend and it was over filled and dip stick showed max oil level. I do have a line going from the oil to the air cleaner. I'm assuming the easiest way is to run the engine and capture the over flow oil from that line?

That line is the breather for your oil tank. When I over filled mine, I simply (but messily) loosened the drain plug and drained some out, then replaced it quickly. Then I re-checked. Or you could get one of those pump type oil changers for this - just don't use it when you normally change the oil.

Thanks, I figured it will be a messy job. Nice car too!
