Fuel Pump Cover Bolts

Hey Everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Knocked out a fuel pump change on my '88 3.2 this past weekend, but in following the guide here, one thing didn't match up. In the referenced article, it states to remove "the two 8mm allen-head bolts;" for me, I was presently only with hex-head bolts.

Considering I'm not the original owner and something might have been swapped by a mechanic down the line, I've gone through the Porsche Parts Catalog to confirm I'm supposed to have the allen-head bolts. Page 133 has the listing of the parts related to that area, and lo-and-behold, only hex-head bolts are listed.

Am I missing something, or does it sound like I have the correct parts (-bolts only, no allen-heads)?

Thanks,
Matthew

I believe stock is an allen (I have that in my SC), but I can't think of a good reason why a hex wouldn't work just fine. Only reason an allen might be better is the ability to push against the sway bar while lining it up would be easier with a "T" allen wrench.

Matthew--

I did this job a couple of months ago, and just checked again in the Bentley manual. Four bolts on the stone guard covering the fuel pump. The forward two (located approx in the center of the stone guard) should be regular bolts (M10). The other two (located on the rear flange of the stone guard) should be allen bolts. BTW, Bentley says 35 ft-lb of torque when tightening all four bolts.

Dave,

Thanks for the follow up.

Question then: any chance anyone know of the part number for the allen-head bolts? That, or can point me to the correct number in the diagram? I've gone through both the parts catalogs for 84-86, and 87-89, and all bolts on the appropriate pages show them as being hex-head. A part that's gotten superceded, perhaps?

Thanks,
Matthew

In the PET they are called panhead bolts ... it would be item 8 although my 89 clearly has allen bolts !

Wildcat,

Thanks for the pointer; I saw the same "panhead screw" descriptor, and it threw me off. I suppose in my experience when something says panhead screw, I normally think of these.

Thanks everyone for the follow up.
