the stamp below the 930/09 stamp is the confirmation it is a 3.1

Guvnor 08-19-2013 11:52 AM

Wow, very cool! What are you going to do with it? Hopefully no longer a parts car ;)

dporsche74 08-19-2013 12:10 PM

With that 3.1 in the article and the 3.1 car for sale both the same car and the only ONE in the USA... (?)
Who else has one .. anyone know of any more and any insight would be great on this ...

thanks and how fun decoding Porsche stuff.

Yes, very cool and very rare. From what I have read on the subject of the '3.1' is that it was a 'power kit' installed at the factory for European customers requesting more than the standard rated power. I don't think it was considered a prototype, but I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, only going by what I have read.

That is a very nice and rare car, but find it hard to believe it would fetch $155K!

djpateman 08-19-2013 12:24 PM

I know of another 3.1 for sale; last price I saw was $15k for the car.

Hi!
I find this very interesting.
May I kindly ask you to permit me sharing this on the German Elfertreff - Das 911 & Porsche Forum - Powered by vBulletin board?

So essentially it seems to be an option for the motor - so the motor is special and the chassis seems to be completely stock. Interesting, the motor should be called the 911SC-RS instead for the 210 horses. Interesting piece, and even more interesting because you can move the motor and put it in another car and the motor still has the option. Good thing you were smart enough to investigate this before all the parts went to the wind. I'm sure that's been done 100 times before with these motors...

saxen 08-20-2013 02:25 PM

I wonder if you could use this engine in spec racing classes... hum..

Why would you want to do that?

dporsche74 08-20-2013 06:39 PM

According to the article it has a larger oil cooler ..I dont know if its larger than a normal SC see Pic below..
It also has a taller 5th gear which i havent got under to get the trans # yet.... cars has 7x8 16 fuchs and velour pin stripped Sport seats..
is the rpm r speedo different then SC ?
So ...wow ..this is Wild.. It looks like I am a 4th finder of one of these Factory Secret 3.1L 210HP RS engine/cars in the US or anywhere else i can find so far ??
Other then that .. Google and Pelican is kinda blank.
I just considered this car a normal SC roach ...
Jimmy Bell informed me of a old Excellence article he read about a rare SC=L
and I should at least check this ROW .. thanks Jimmy i would have never known about the 3.1 !!

How Awesome is that!!! lol

Jim Williams has a real 3.1 engine in his early car

CountD 08-20-2013 08:38 PM

I'm sure people will be on the lookout more - I mean these engines are pretty bulletproof. People in Europe probably know what they have, and to them it's pretty special. Most that are lost will probably be discovered like you did - removing the shroud and seeing square parts.

dporsche74 08-21-2013 12:14 PM

Indeed... who ever has a 1979-1981 ROW car .. run out a check for the 3.1 stamp :)

also is that oil cooler longer then and stock SC one?... anyone have one sitting around they can measure

javadog 08-21-2013 12:42 PM

That oil cooler is the 20 tube brass cooler. The early SC used the trombone-style cooler, which is why they probably listed the brass one as "bigger". At some point, I think the ROW SC got the brass cooler.

Nothing special about the speedo and tach. The speedo might be original. Check the date stamps on the back and compare them to the build date of the car.

Got pictures of the whole car?

That motor is rare and cool, but I'd be careful calling it an RS motor, as it was more of a super secret power kit option than something destined for motorsport like the true SC/RS of that time.

That oil cooler looks just like the one in my '80 RoW SC. And yes, I've checked for the 3.1 stamp on mine and had none.:(
