Is it a fuel smell or a burning oil smell?

If it's ehaust smell, you could be running rich, an analyzer could tell you. Funny aside, I noticed in a Summit catalog that they sell perfumes you can add to the gas...no schmidt...various scents available. With MFI, my car runs rich, and you can smell it. With apologies to Raul Julia: "What's behind me doesn't matter!"

Jeff humbly steps up to the podium...

I drive a 72 911T and my car stinks too!

On the brighter side, it works very effectively at getting rid of tailgaters!

Seriously though, you may be (probably are) running too rich. If the car is fine otherwise, it may just need to be put on a gas analyzer and leaned out a little bit. If you pull the plugs they will probably look black and sooty.

Hard to describe the smell. It just stinks. Doesn't smoke and runs and idles fine. I have a new gas air compressor w/ a briggs 6.5 HP motor and the exhaust smell is about the same which alleviates my worries a bit. I thought maybe it was because there is not catalatic convertor. It's just a bit embarrasing, and people say "whats wrong with your car?" Tired of hearing that one even though most of the time its used on the track. I should be running premium in the 73 correct?? I use 10w30 mobile 1. Is that burning off?? Maybe someday soon I'll be able to send a "smell" attachment file like a .sniff file so eveyone can smell for them selves. True story abou the perfume??

This is becoming a "fun" string. Also, let's not discount the fuel itself. I wasn't aware of the regional differences until I went to the 2001 "Tour de Cambria"...once I entered California and bought what passes for gasoline down there? (The Cali bureaucrats have dubbed this stuff "reformulated fuel" Who am I to argue? It sure didn't smell like gasoline!) I couldn't believe the stink! I mean, coming out of the nozzle, that stuff smelled worse than a six months old cat litter box! My car didn't run well on it either...I noticed a drop in idle RPM, almost to the point of stalling.

You should not be running premium in a 73 T. It only has a 7.5:1 compression ratio!

The Bosch manuals for MFI advise AGAINST running higher octane gas as it can interfere with normal operation of the fuel injection system.

It is a CIS engine. Does the non-premium apply here??
Should I also be running 15w-50??
The manula states strait 30 in the summer, but I've also heard 20w-20 or 20w-40 something like that. I have always used 10W30 mobile 1. Does the absent catalyst cause the smell??

Uh.... I confess too, my ride smells. But I think I need some fuel tank/area attention. Isn't there a seal around the sender unit that goes after about 30 yrs and the clear lines for venting have hardened and loosened I believe. However, I do need to check mixture and plugs but when I top off ( using 87/89 oct, is that right for 3.0 CIS?? ) I get a strong fuel smell.

Make sure your ignition system is working perfectly. Most are not. Once that is verified, if the smell persists and your mixture is set correctly, then I would consider trying ordinary dino-oil to see if the smell changes. I'm thinking that if an engine were burning some of its lubricating oil, and if that oil is synthetic, the fragrance might be offensive.

I suspect the CIS engine is also supposed to run on regular unleaded but someone with a CIS car will have to confirm. I doubt it's going to fix the smell, however.
