fiberglass alternator shroud

I accidentally cracked the fiberglass shroud while removing the alternator on my 87 911 Turbo. Given that it is 26 years old (and probably saturated with grease, dirt and oil) is there a good way to fix it? It will stay place when the alternator gets put back in but I would still like to try and repair if possible.

Do you mean the engine shroud or the air deflector shroud on the back of the alternator?

Is it a crack that could be supported with fiberglass cloth from the back side?

Assuming it's the big shroud.

Try here:
series900@nhvt.net
or TRE
Damon at series 900 makes exact copies. TRE has very good ones too.

fiberglass alternator shroud

Yes it is the engine cooling shroud in back of the alternator. A fiberglass layup may fix it but I am not sure it will stick because it has been exposed to many years of oil and grease. A co-worker told me that JB Weld may be a good option until I have time to replace/properly fix the part.

I would like to see you have some strength behind the crack. If you only put JB weld in the crack you might as well use clear epoxy glue as the black JB will highlight the crack.

I like risking the oil and grease by cleaing it off (carb cleaner works well) then using a wire brush on a drill on the backside to rough it up a bit. Even a piece of sheet metal curved in the arc would help if you roughed it up AND used the JB weld to hold it in place - use two small clamps to squish the sheet metal to the arc. Rough up sheet metal and the shroud. Get the regular JB and wait a day before touching it.

Maybe put clear epoxy in the crack first to seal the top side from bleed thru of the black.
