'84 cab latch handle broke off

'84 manual cab.....Attached is a photo of my driver-side convertible top latch. Trying to close the top today, using the manual "latch handles", the handle broke in half while inside the latch.

Apparently I'm either very strong, or that steel gets brittle over 30 years of use. You pick.

Anyways, I've tried small screwdrivers, etc to get this piece out of the latch mechanism, and it's not moving. Any advice ?

for orientation purposes - this photo was taken with the top in the down position / folded down.

thanks!

Why couldn't you just take that cover piece off? In my 87 it covered the motors is removable.
