Some knowledgeable guys on the board recommend shipping a transaxle in a large plastic cooler through Fedex. 120 bucks cross country.

I second that. Drill some holes around the edge and use plastic wire ties to bound lid. Then just pack it with preferred "stuffing". Lighter, quicker and cheaper than making a wood crate. And when done its either useful or easier to dispose of than a wood box.

Pretty sure my 915/73 with LSD was a lot more than 110 lbs packed. Seem to recall my G50 was around 160.

+1 on the cooler; cheap, effective and easy.

You MUST drain the transmission oil, otherwise not only is it a godawful mess inside when it leaks out the breather, you probably risk the carrier dumping it half-way and refusing.

I use the next to largest cooler at Walmart (measure and I think you need 31 in length and 14 or 15 width and height. Coleman Xtreme 120 Quart Cooler - Walmart.com

A complete trans and the cooler weighs 144 pounds and FedEx will ship up to 150. I get a reduce rate and it is about $110, retail might be about 130 bucks. I think this is the best way to ship. I usually screw the lid closed with some sheetrock screws
