Sharing weird things that happen on cars: A client came into the shop the other day with complaints of an intermittent clicking noise while he drove. "AHA!" We said- "the center wheel caps on your 911 have loosened on the mounting cups and the rivets will have to be peened to stop that clicking". Well, all the caps were good and tight, suspension, brakes, all in order. So we bounced the wheels- hey nothing else to see or check at that time, right? One of the wheels had something bouncing around inside: The tire shop had broken off a protective clip and left it inside! Remove tire, remove plastic clip- remount= Weird click all gone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Cars are incredibly reliable. If I had a suspension clicking, I'd look for rock under the hubcaps, rocks in the tread, nails in the tread, something stuck to an axle that's flapping, etc. More times than not, it's something really simple.

When I worked at NTB, we had a customer come in complaining about his steering wheel shaking violently-but only on really cold mornings, and only for the first few miles of driving-then it would smooth out. He had his tires rotated (side to side) and balanced at a different shop, but the problem remained.
It turned out to be water INSIDE the tire-overnight it would freeze, and the chunk of ice in one spot would throw the wheel out of balance until it melted. We advised him to replace the tire, because of possible rust to the steel belts...and to not get new tires mounted in the rain. |
