Question '89 Targa Radio Antenna

Hi Guys,

So I was installing a new Head Unit in the car, and I am not getting any radio reception. I did some searching around, but I cannot get the answer as of yet.

I know the antenna is in the Windshield. The Thick Antenna Cable that attaches to the back of the unit is in, and there is a smaller (either 16 or 18 GA) wire wrapping around it. I believe this wire is for an antenna amplifier.

I read that you can power this wire with the Power antenna lead off the head unit, and it should work....

Before I do this, I wanted to check with you guys to see if it could work.

Thanks!

Gersh

Yep. Small black wire is the amp power. Makes all the difference.

Mine was wrapped around the antenna cabling. Just trace the antenna cable and wire to a small rectangual box to make sure. The antenna boster was about 1"x3"x4" approximately.

I'm going to have to check this out. My 87 Targa came with an aftermarket radio unit and it gets terrible reception. I think I pick up like 10 stations max.

Never bothered me enough to tear into it but maybe I'll give it a go one of these days.

Michael - That's exactly what mine looks like

Tincob - Up in the Sticks I got nothing on the old head unit. It would not even pick up the FM modulator in the car very well.

Hi Guys,

SUCCESS!

The thin wire that is wrapped around the main antenna wire was the missing element for radio reception. I took that wire and connected to the Head Unit's 12V Antenna Power Lead (Blue Wire) that would control the power antenna motor if the car was so equipped.

Once the small wire was receiving power, I had excellent reception at the tuner!

Fantastic!
